Carr's method works
I read Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking in 2009 and haven't smoked since. Not even craved a cigarette. So I was curious about his other books. I didn't try them right away, I suppose I was worried that if they didn't work then it would crush my idea that he really did develop a great system to stomp out our bad habits. So I downloaded this recently and decided to give it a try. It was very similar in nature to the EasyWay method: while you might not be startled by new amazing facts, Carr's method is different. It works by undoing the mental and emotional connections to the the habit and product, reversing the brainwashing that years of consumption, advertising and society did to our minds.Have I kicked sugar since reading it? I'd say by amount 80%. Do I miss it? Nope, hardly at all. I am not craving chocolate, cake, cookies, bread, potatoes. It's amazing really to change a 4-decade habit with a book.

Wonderful, if you have the resources to commit
Allen Carr is my luvvie to be honest. Three years ago he helped me quit smoking, and I've been forever grateful and never took another puff of tobacco. My loyalty to him is well-deserved:After I quit drinking, I had some scary sugar binges (I'm talking eating 9 loft-house style sugar cookies in under a half-hour here, people!!!!) so I realized I had a problem brewing pretty quick. Because I got a second job, lately I've had more income, so I felt I had the resources to eat a better diet. I scooped this book on Audible AND read along to the Kindle version. It's been three months and I have really enjoyed being ~almost~ sugarless - sometimes I'll partake in processed carbs if there is a special occasion, but if I'm flying solo I go the EasyWay!

It's worked for me! I am OFF sugar!
I bought this and Easy Way for Women to Lose Weight, which I learned about from my friend who is trying to quit smoking. I didn't agree with 100% of what he said which is why I gave it 4 stars but I now understand that I am addicted to sugar. I can look back on my life and see instances where this is 100% true. And I agree that sugar is not my friend, but an enemy which has affected my life in many negative ways. I can't say that I don't think that cake, cookies and ice cream do not taste good but for the past 3 weeks I have truly had no desire to have any of it. I feel that this book has set me on a positive path. I really think that I will stay off sugar for the rest of my life because a stupid dish of ice cream is just not worth the heartache it causes and the stress of wanting more, more, more....... I have more peace of mind without it, and I really feel this way deep inside and am not waiting to get to my goal weight so that I can be done with the diet, as I've done so many times before. I prefer to not be enslaved to "foods" that don't even nourish the body.

Buyer beware
This book makes giving up sugar seem as easy as 1-2-3. If you're a true sugar addict, it just isn't that easy. When I finished this book I was so enthusiastic I went through my cupboards and threw out so many things - not sugary things because I don't keep them in the house, but stuff like a 100-packet box of stevia sweetener because the book says even natural sweeteners are as bad as sugar.Am I off sugar? No, within 48 hours the book's effects wore off and the sugar crash sent me right back to the sugar. One thing I have learned, though: Don't keep sugary snacks or drinks in the house. That way if you want it, you have to get in your car and go get it. When you do, get only ONE SERVING, so you won't have leftovers to store in the house. This won't prevent you from consuming sugar, but it will cut down on your sugar consumption. And the fact that you know you can get into your car and go get some any time you want takes the pressure off the need for sugar.

I highly recommend this book!
In 2009 I quit smoking with the help of Allen Carr's book. I was joking then that all words "cigarettes" should be replaced with "chocolate" and I would be sugar free as well. Naturally, I just had to read the book Good Sugar Bad Sugar to see what happens. Guess what? It worked this time too! I do eat more fruit than before, but that's ok - 150 g of apple is far more better than 150 g of cookies.Don't be too nitpicky, though. There are holes and inconsistencies in the text. Leave them, and rather focus on the benefit that waits for you at the end of the book - sugar-free life!

No Science, Bad Advice, Frustrating Sales Pitch
Allen Carr came up with an approach for helping people to stop smoking cigarettes. I offer no opinion on that since that has never been an issue for me, but when he tries to take the same approach and apply it to sugar addiction he is sadly lacking. The actual neuroscience of how the brain and body responds to sugar as an addiction is real. Carr wants to throw that under the bus by trying to convince his audience that it is as simple as obtaining a new understanding. His writing style sounds more like a 1950’s cookware sales pitch than a well presented, fact laden outline of what to do and why book. He drags it on trying to build to an “exciting” conclusion but leaves the reader frustrated and reaching for cookies! If you are like one third of the population, with an actual sugar addiction, and want real science and support, check out Dr. Susan Pearce Thompson’s books on the subject.

Not only sugar but nutrition in general
I was looking for a book that would help me battle my sugar addiction and this book certainly helped (although I am still battling). It explains some nutritional facts about human diet drawing comparisons with chimpanzee (who is very close to us in terms of genes). The reasoning is the same as in other Carr's books on addictions and it gradually guides you to a point where you want to NOT consume it any more. A good read.

Follow this and you will be one healthy human!
Well, it certainly gets the message across. Might be a bit extreme as it heads toward nearly vegetarian diet. Based on more recent research, I think the book needs updating as a healthy diet contains protein, carbs and some fat. But it does make you think about bread, potatoes, rice, and most processed foods as poor dietary choices. So I think it is a good read if a little extreme.

Where to start
I gave up smoking after 15 years thanks to the Stop Smoking book, and I have a serious lack of self control when it comes to chocolate and the like, so when I found this book I thought "Great! Let's do this!". God am I disappointed.Firstly, this book doesn't just want you to give up chocolate. It includes bread, pasta and potatoes. Ok, fine. I know they're not the best foods to eat, and if you're willing to put yourself through that then good for you.It repeatedly calls BAD SUGAR "poisons". Say what you like about chocolate and cake, but you will never get me to consider potatoes poisonous. It claims that all BAD SUGARS are empty calories. Now, I'm no dietitian, but it is my understanding that you do get some fibre from carbs. He is OBSESSESD with fruit. He would have us eat nothing else.Apparently, none of this stuff actually tastes good. That's just not true. Mashed potatoes are amazing, and I could happily live off Creme Eggs for the rest of my life (hence why I bought the book in the first place). It finishes by telling you to eat your last meal and vow to never BAD SUGAR again. Seriously, no one could ever consider this realistic. Finally, I hate the way it's written. It's like a rambling lecture. Like when your off the grid vegan co-worker goes off on one (to be fair though the smoking one was written in a similar manner). In summary, not only did the book not work, it was a chore to read. I did finish it, but only because I thought "maybe it's working and I'm just not noticing". I then went and had a creme egg.

Hooray, I’m free!
Thank you for this book it has helped me to be free from sugar at last. I used the Allen Carr books for Smoking and alcohol in the past too and they really work. One word of advice though, I find with these books you have to choose to allow them to work. For example, there might be the odd fact or statement which you don’t think is completely true, don’t worry about these. Just decide to believe in the books and they will work for you. If you don’t think it has worked, commit to believing in the book and read it again. It will work for you.Another tip is the audio book is only 3.99 once you’ve bought the ebook. I found listening to the audio book while reading the words at the same time was the most powerful way of getting the information into my brain.

Easy to read and the method really works
20 years ago I stopped smoking using Allen Carr's methods. The process was relatively painless and it has worked as I haven't smoked since the day I became a non-smoker. I saw this book advertised and decided I could apply the same methods to my relationship with starchy carbohydrates - sugary foods in particular as I am concerned about the risks of diabetes and I want to be in the best health I can be having had an unexpected heart attack in 2017.I find the writing style in this book rather SHOUTY and at times the information is repetitive but it is quite easy to read. Basically the messages are sound, the method is just the same as for stopping smoking, and the steps are relatively easy to follow. It's mostly about understanding how your mind works in relation to things you think are 'nice and can't do without'. Once you've nailed that you're sorted!

Brilliant book.
Brilliant book... I ate chocolate while reading it then suddenly about half way through, I just didn't want to eat sugar any more!! That was a couple of months ago and if I ever do feel the need to eat some sugar I will re read it. (Mind you my evening treat is now a small bowl of cheese puffs!!)I wish they did a book on giving up TV - my next challenge.

Accept you are addicted
You have to want to change. You have to know you are going to change your life and not fear it. I’ve read three of these books and it has changed my life immeasurably. Removing the want want want for chocolate and sweets is a complete game changer, and something this book does very well. I was eating a multi pack of whatever chocolate was on offer at Tesco’s daily, crisps and whatever else I could get hold of cheap to fill me up. You finish the last chapter of the book and the want is gone ( some say it happens earlier on in the book). Since finishing the book on February 22nd 2019 I’ve gone from a little of 14 stone to a little over 12 and a half stone. This book is a very easy read, and I finished it much quicker than the others. Basically once you accept you are addicted, there’s no looking back. I highly recommend this book.
