This book should have more than 5 Stars!
Do you know when the letter C softens to the /s/ sound and when it has the /k/ sound? You will when you read this book! Do you know when G has the /j/ sound and when it has the hard /guh/ sound? You will when you read this book! Did you know that English words don't end in the letter I? They don't. Do you know what other letters aren't used to end words with in English? You will when you read this book! There are 31.3 spelling rules given in this book. Once you know them, you'll be an English reading and spelling Whiz! This is a fabulous book, simply fabulous!! Now, I've never had a hard time learning to read or spell - it came rather naturally to me, but I couldn't explain why words sounded a certain way or were spelled the way they are. But after you read/study Uncovering the Logic of English, you'll be saying, "Oh! I never knew that. That makes so much sense. I get it! How easy is that?" And if you need to teach someone else, you'll make their life so much better. GET THIS BOOK! Get this book and give it as a gift for anyone who wants to understand the "whys" of English or is struggling in their reading. They'll be thanking you every time they see you. DO IT!

Heads up educators .....
Educators have been missing the boat! All administrators, curriculum developers, and teachers, need to read / study this book. Phonics has been getting a bad name, perpetrated because most educators do not have the full understanding of what the scope of the teaching is about. Despite having a good command of the English language, my mind was blown away after I read this book! We are cheating our children, putting "bandaids" on their (and too often their teachers, because they themselves were not taught) lack of knowledge. There are schools that encourage students to put a box around the shape of the word. Why?? This does nothing to help a child learn how to read... not when there are blocks / shapes that are the same, or almost the same, for perhaps 10 words! With well over a million English words, is a child expected to know that many words by looking at them by shape or guessing?? They need the building blocks and rules Denise Eide talks about, that can be used to guide a child to learn how to tie it all together. Most excellent book!!I am very passionate about education. This is a book that everyone should read! Reading is not a guessing game. It's built on a strong foundation!

Goes perfectly with copywork and dictation!
I hated their curriculum, which is probably not fair because I typically don't like any curriculum. But this book is a gem! It goes perfectly with our practice of copywork and dictation. I'm not sure how I feel about the generalizing or labeling of this program being a good match for mathy kids, but... it's true for us. My son sees patterns in math so easily, and yet it doesn't stick for reading and spelling. When I go over a rule here, in conjunction with our copywork, it's like a light bulb goes off. (small amounts at a time). These rules are precise, simple, clean, accurate, and thorough. It's all covered. There are very few, true exceptions, and they are listed. which is nice because I feel like I have a good, big picture sense of 'how many' outliers there are. Then you can prioritize or choose to not worry about them.

Our Son Spells So Well Now!
My son's writing teacher at the Community Learning Center in Clearwater, FL introduced me to this book. I have a B.A. in English and I learned so much from reading this! I would read a page and my kids and husband would hear me in the next room say, "Oh my gosh!" I just kept finding out more and more truth about the English language and spelling and got rid of so much false information. My son struggled with spelling because he is very logical and not particularly a visual learner. He is spelling almost effortlessly now and this is such a huge relief - he had hated writing because he couldn't think with the spelling before. Now he understands and is an easy speller! Thanks so much to the Community Learning Center and to the author, Denise Eide. This book improved the quality of our son's life.

So Helpful!
This book is absolutely fascinating. I’m a homeschool mom who follows the Charlotte Mason philosophy; when it was time to teach my oldest to read I realized how little I knew about phonics. After doing some research I found this book and it has been an amazing resource. The chapters are short and easy to understand. I typically read 1-2 chapters per day with time to process in between. I have worked through this book 2-3 times and retain a little more each time. An absolute necessity when teaching your children to read/spell, especially if you don’t want to follow a particular curriculum. Between this book and The ABC’s and All Their Tricks (review cards) my son is getting an excellent understanding of decoding words just through the conversations we have while he reads.

A Must-Read
I have several English major friends who didn't know some of the simplest rules from this book. When I shared a couple rules with my best girlfriend (a Journalism and English major) she immediately said she needed to read the book herself to utilize it with her beginning reader.I am very excited about the information in this book and am currently looking at the Foundations curriculum to use with my children (who are in public school learning to read). While this book is a very easy and quick read, I do feel like this book could be even more in-depth as well as include some history. It would also be nice if it were to point a reader in the direction of even more information. This is not a book about grammar or sentence structure.

Simply great
We are not native English speakers, so we needed desperately some support to help our children understand English language after we have finished understanding it... :). This book proved to be very useful for us as well and using parallel with the videos and the app makes a better understanding (this starting to look like a paid advertisement, but it's not...still, but I hope it will be... :) ) The only problem is that it is US English and we've been warned in school to try to avoid US pronunciation to learn, but still haven't found a better way and spending almost their whole day in school will be a greater influence on their English we just may get deepened by the explanation from this book.

an excellent book very informative
As someone who is dyslexia and has been searching for someone who could explain the mysteries of the English language so that it all makes sense I was delighted to find this book. At 46years of age I wish it had been around along time ago. However I am overjoyed that it's here now and it will be of great assistance to me and my dyslexia son. I have said for many years that phonics it not taught properly and had a conversation with a teacher earlier the year who mispronounced the s and t speech sounds and gleefully informed me that English is a visually language only 30% phonic so it's not worth learning phonics! I am so overjoyed to find someone who truly understands the logic of it all and will enable me to help myself and my son. I Thank you with my whole heart.

It is funny, since I moved to the UK I've met ...
Here 's a viewpoint from a non native speaker. Even though I knew the meaning and the spelling of many words (due to French), I was wondering how to pronounce the new words I met. Now it is more obvious to know which sounds I must say.It is funny, since I moved to the UK I've met nobody who knew these rules (even very educated people). For the French who wanna improve their English, that book can help you for speaking or writing. I'm not sure for listening. First, trust your intuitions. French and English share many words and some rules mentioned in that book are common rules in roman languages. I still recommend that book
