Great book, it’s different to the Lonely Planet version, slightly less detail, but I like it more!

A new ( more lightweight) overview
We have a copy of the original DK India guide (revised 2014) which, whilst comprehensive, is somewhat heavy at 800 pages.DK have revised their latest format of guides making them lighter (thinner paper, somewhat smaller type) but still include many (matt) photographs, maps and area coverage.India is such a large sub continent that inevitably they have had to be selective. There are more detailed DK guides for various areas but this (624 pages) updated (rewritten?) edition gives an excellent overview of the country. To date we have only visited coastal areas (from cruise ship) but are looking at other areas to visit. After some 77 pages of scene setting (including some classic itineraries) the book goes into more detail of the various areas, focussing on “must see” tourist items. (As said above there are other DK books covering specific areas in detail ).

Fabulous
I have traveled extensively through India on several trips and this is super bang up to date. Its sections allow you to plan and consider where to go first and which area you wish to do your first 2 weeks in-you need a lifetime to travel through India so this is a perfect planner. very well researched and excellent one-stop guide.

Crammed to the Brim!
This compact but well laid out book is primarily designed for those looking to visit India, though there is plenty to enjoy for readers who won't be visiting. Beautiful photographs lead your eye throughout, while the succinct location information and maps (both general land maps and those of specific places) provide a clearer idea of what to expect. The book divides India into 22 'sightseeing areas', helpfully colour-coded and linked to their relevant chapter. Its introduction gives an overview of India as a country - its history, culture, architecture, food and nature, amongst others. A section of featured locations includes highlights of what experiences they would provide a tourist. There are also recommended things to see, and weekly itineraries for those who are stuck for inspiration. Each sightseeing area chapter contains multiple place entries, as well as their addresses, phone numbers, websites and opening times where applicable. Transport information is also included. Places to eat and sleep are highlighted, often with expense ratings out of 3 (3 being the priciest).Added trivia and useful facts, as well as instructions on etiquette, phrases and customs, ensure that this book is going to become quite worn from all the thumbing through that will be done - before, during and after the holiday. A valuable point of reference for anyone looking to get the most from their trip, or even just looking to learn more about India.
