This Book Is Not Only OK for Younger Kids--I Recommend It For Them
Ignore the review that said this is not a book for younger kids. It absolutely is. The pictures the other reviewer puts up are mostly memories of the main character's older brother who was spiraling into addiction.Spoilers - Her parents sent her away with her grandfather while they were trying to get the brother help (but they never told Sunny this so she assumed it was all her fault). Meanwhile the grandfather was trying to hide his smoking habit. Eventually Sunny (the main character) called him on it and he helped her open up about her brother. Afterwards they promised to keep no more secrets and they both threw out the grandfather's cigarettes together as he decided he really was going to quit.So if you buy this for your younger child, make sure to read it first. It is a good way to open up a gentle conversation about the reality of drug abuse and the problem with keeping secrets. It is also a wonderful way to show a child that it is actually okay and even positive to "tell on" someone if they are in trouble--getting themselves hurt or hurting others--and it is good to talk if someone makes you feel sad or hurt. Studies back up that children are less likely to run into issues with drug addiction if they have adults in their lives to talk with them early about it.So I am very glad I took advantage of the Kindle deal for this book. I will be letting my 8 year old read it tonight.

Not for younger kids
My 8 year old really liked this book, but if I had known of the content prior to her reading it I would not have let her. Some of the things in this book I find inappropriate for the innocent, young minded, highly impressionable child. I scanned through the book after she read it and questioned her about some parts. Some she claimed to have forgotten were there even after just reading the book that day. Or she went silent on some topics. She read the book in a day which is great that something could hold her attention all the way through, but I feel if I want to quickly pump information in her head it should not be about drinking, drugs and abuse. When she sits down to read for fun, I want it to be fun carefree reading. Something that takes her to a happy place. I have included pictures of pages I found inappropriate for her. I think the age rating should be at least 10+

Good age appropriate option for Dyslexic Daughter
Great graphic novel for my 13 year old who has Dyslexia. She loves graphic novels and it is so hard to find age appropriate one. Several out now want to drag our tweens and early teens into young adulthood before they are ready, and/or are being marketed as appropriate for this age, despite not being. This book deals with issues siblings can face these days (brother has drug problem which is putting a strain on the whole family, elderly grandparent). Nicely shows the relationship between a child and her grandparent who lives in retirement community (my own daughter visits her grandfather weekly). It is not over a 13 year old's head though, as some critically acclaimed graphic novels are (namely This One Summer).

mediocre
I seem to be the only person with a review annything below 4 stars that doesnt camplain about the drugs/alcohol. It is my opinion that kids sould not be hidden or protected from the real world because one day they have to live in it. Otherwise youll end up like my moms college roomate who was so unawere of current events and what sorts of thing guns and terrorists are and do, that when she heard about 9/11, she though it was a good thing. Would you want your kid to grow up to be that person? My issues wiith this book are:1. We dont get informed weatheer or not sunnys brother becomes sober.2. We never find out if the grandpa stops smoking. They give the impression that he will, but in the begining they did the same thing and he was just lying.3. This book is so short. I'm a fast reader, but most books take me at LEAST an hour, usually more. I read this in 20 minuetes. The thing I like about the book are:1.Its relateable. Unfortutely in the 21sr century this stuggle with addiction is more common than it used to be, and hundreds suffer beause of it. When you read this book it puts you NOT in the shoes off not soomeone who is stuggleing with addiction, BUT the sister of one.2. It teaches kids about thing that actually hapen. read above.3. The artwork is good.In conclusion, make your ow decision on wether or not to buy the book. I honestly hole that this reviw helped you maake your decision about weteatehr or not to buy this book.froman elven year old girl.

Some things seemed to be a bit rushed
Uhm... don't know what to think about this graphic novel. On one hand, it gives an interesting (and a bit creepy) description of the gated communities. I'm sure that that kind of community are a sort of paradise for anthropologists... You know, things like you feel same in the community but you can't stray from the path because otherwise people will turn on you because you disrupt the harmony... We do have an example here: poor Sunny is sent to live with her grandpa in his retirement community and the old coots that live there don't like her that much. And she needs a fricking pass to be able to go around the community. SIGH!Anyway. The art was OK, while colors where really bright (as I like them). The plot... I don't know. I think that it left too much out. Don't get me wrong: I like all the comics references but I'm not sure they serve the purpose of illustrate what was going on.One of the main point of this book is substance abuse and how it affects the family life. But everything is murmured and not clearly exposed. And when Sunny finally confesses what's bothering her, it's too late into the book and the graphic novel ends few pages later. I feel as if there were not enough room to develop Sunny's feeling about it.A good reading but I think that some of its themes should have been developed a bit more.

Sunny Side Up
I thought it was AmAzInG! It had a good problem and good relationships throughout the book. Im glad I read it and young readers would almost certainly like it too. I recommend this book for kids of the age 11-13.

Sunny side up
Sunny side up is a really funny and well written graphic novel by Jennifer L Holm. It shows that there is an up side to everything. As well as don't be afraid to try new things.
