I only bought it for the thermometer but glad to have each tool. The whistle is a little weak and probably better off just using your mouth. Thermo seems to be accurate, flint and steel makes a sweet spark, and the compass is spot on. I'm a numbers guy so having the temperature is very important for me especially testing sleep systems and knowing where I'm comfortable in what arrangement. I would definitely recommend this to others. (22 grams with key chain, if that helps anyone)

The could do better: The whistle is um quite weak. It works but you can't put full lung power behind it or it snuffs it's own sound out like a candle flame. There's a bulky block that sticks out where the whistles sound chamber is. Its where the company's logo is on the pictures. It isn't to bad just bulky and is hidden by picture angles. The bad: The plastic where the split ring goes through looks like it isn't going to last long, it's a quite thin strip of plastic. The good: The ferro rod works and is very sparky. The button compass is very responsive, both it how fast it tracks back to north and in how much play you have before it gets stuck from not holding it perfectly flat. It's also accurate. No joke this is the button compass you want over all other button compasses. I'm surprised at how there wasn't any crappyness when that's where I'd expected a cheap compass. I'd still buy this again, it's not bad but you can't expect to use it outside your gear as a zipper pull and not expect to find it missing when you might need it. Use it for internal back pack zippers maybe? If that thin plastic strip were thickened up the other complaints are more improvements needed but still a good product, if that thin plastic strip is thickened up. I might see where I could drill a hole through it and see if I can get a better and more durable attachment point.

The thermometer was tested in two separate freezers and two separate refrigerators to assess operating temperatures. I'm satisfied it gave me reliable readings, after which it conformed to room temperature readings inside my home taken from another unit. It is quite sensitive to the heat of your hand. Compass is very small and will get hung up if not level. The ferro rod and the striker are quite small for my large hands. One could easily fumble and lose the striker in the field. The whistle operates with gentle blowing only, not strong or hard. It's a nice little backup for the glove box of the car or attached to a jacket zipper on a hike. It's not meant to be a primary.

Had an item something like this before, about the same size and form factor, but with just the thermometer and compass. The addition of a fire starter and whistle sounded intriguing, so I ordered one. Pros: -It has a thermometer, compass, and emergency fire starter. It also has a whistle, but see the Cons below. -The serrated edge striker works well with the ferrocene rod. I was surprised how far it throws sparks. -It's compact, battery-free, and low-tech. Don't underestimate the value of having an ambient temperature reading without having to reach for a phone or other electronic device. Cons: -The whistle is a joke. When you blow, it does emit a tone, but much too high pitched and too low in volume to be heard. Might attract dogs, but useless to signal for help. Maybe it's a special frequency for rescue dogs? -Both the ferrocene rod and the striker contain iron and therefore attract the compass. You need to remove both to avoid interference. The metal split ring does not attract the compass. -If this is jolted around enough, for instance on a keychain, the thermometer liquid may separate into parts, like any other spirit-filled thermometer. To fix it, submerge it into a coffee mug of hot (> 120 °F) water. Make sure to keep it upright. -The compass does not have a correction for magnetic declination. This is to be expected for a compass of this size. Moreover, this is not intended to be your primary compass. Verdict: Of the four devices that it boasts, only three are functional. Nonetheless, this is a great, low-tech device to use for backup. Hang it on your pack.

I bought this for the thermometer and compass. I thought perhaps having a fire starter isn't bad either. The compass isn't accurate though. It gets stuck and doesn't move when you move around. Also the thermometer never changed temperature. I was hiking in 35 degrees, and the thermometer said 55. It never said anything other than 55 the other 3-4 times I used it, all of which had different temperatures out. The whistle also doesn't work well either.

Thing is way cool, I use it in the wild hunting vole and albatross. The compass doesn’t work unless you pull out the ferro ROD. Wink wink, nudge nudge! Say! No! More!

Bought this for back country hiking. I compared Compass accuracy using a decent compass and it is reasonably accurate but you have to remove the flint and striker or it is 20 degrees off. Flint definitely does not work even in ideal conditions. Not enough length to get decent amount of friction to create a spark. Tried with two people for 20 mins. Nothing. Oh and the flint is covered in black paint which you need to scape off first. Whistle is weak to say the least. In the wind the sound would not travel far. Temp gauge seems to work ok but I did not test comprehensively. If you think your life will one day depend on this device…look elsewhere. Great for kids stocking stuffers is the best thing I can say about it.

The absolute best thermometer i have, and i have several. Usually the thermometers are about 5 degrees off when they are cheap. Not this one, it's absolutely spot on to a single degree.
