For the Love of Land: Global Case Studies of Grazing in Nature's Image

I ordered the book after watching Alan Savory's inspiring TED speech--and was intimidated by its bulk. How in the world was I going to force myself to plow through case studies of cattle ranching operations? Answer: I couldn't put it down. This is more than a book about successfully running animals, it is an uplifting and impassioned commentary about living with the land in a way that not only sustains, but creates abundance. Like any good story, it is relevant to the way we all live our lives, cattle rancher or no.

For those interested in manageing rangelands world-wide this is the bible. Jim Howell does a wonderful job sharing his knowledge and experience working with nature and the people on the land from the American west to Mexico, South America, Australia and Africa. Jim's understanding of how plants respond to grazing and the plant/animal relationship is amazing. Of special interest to me was the prehistorical account of the rangelands and how they and their resident inhabitants evolved. If you own or manage any land anywhere you should own this book.

This is an excellent book for all those already involved in holistic planned grazing, MIg type grazing or is just starting out with grazing a few cattle. Jim's vast knowledge and experiences taken from all parts of the world will help all of us do a better job caring for the land, no matter what climate we are in. Jim Howell does an excellent job of describing how Holistic Management is applied in a commercial setting to achieve improved animal performance, improved land characteristics, and increased profits. An excellent book.

Good book for people like me who are interested in the subject of grazing and pasture management. I liked reading about grazing management in different environments around the world.

It helped me learn on certain grazing systems. It helps make you understand different ways of grazing that has been used all over.

There are a truckload of really excellent books about grazing management out there, but this one actually applies to the brittle environments where grazing management is most critical.

the topic covered - intense rangeland management to increase productivity and create better land and water buffers- is very important and this has many interesting and unique narratives and experiences on holistic land management ala allan savory. the book is very much a personal journey nice - but sometimes one misses the bigger picture and systematic background
