Has anyone actually washed this? How did it go?

Is the blanket stitched so that the center layer doesn't shift or get bunched up?

Yes! Nothing worse than the layers separating, but this blanket doesn’t have that problem. It is probably one of my favorite amazon purchases!

If you were to put sand on top of it; will the sand sift through it?

No. But this is not recommended at all for beach since a huge amount of sand will stick to the back. You can shake it like crazy in 30mph wind or smack it with a tennis racket for an hour or even hose it down and back will still be covered in sand. If you wash it in machine with that stuck on sand you will damage your washing machine
