The Bone Charmer Hardcover – May 21, 2019

The start of this book is a little clunky, figuring out the dynamics between the main character, Saskia, and her family, as well as how the magic system worked was a little hard to grasp at first. However, this also may be because I was trying to read the book while still at Comic-Con. But after the first 20 or so pages when the story starts to unfold I was hooked.Going in, I was a little scared that I would enjoy one of Saskia’s paths more than the other, and I was pleasantly surprised this ended up not happening. I loved both of her stories equally!The intrigue, tension, and pacing matched in both timelines and kept the story moving forward. And in the end, both of Saskia’s paths are masterfully woven together.

This may be one of the most captivating, unique YA fantasies I've read in ages. I loved the main character, Saskia. She's lovable, strong, flawed, and impossible not to root for. Shields' magic system was absolutely fascinating, and the two timelines had me totally on the edge of my seat. The twists and turns paid off beautifully, and the ending was the right kind of inevitable. Furthermore, Shields writes beautifully without ever overrwriting. She has the ability to describe familiar emotions just a little differently than other authors, and I found the writing accessible and evocative. I loved everything about this story and cannot wait for the finale, already.

It’s when I lose myself and become a fly on the wall that I know I am reading a great book. This book teased me. I would find myself completely dedicated to Saskia's character and experience only for the next paragraph to change it up on me. For a short moment I am disappointed, but I quickly re-identify with the other path she is on and once again lose myself to the story.As a mother I would give anything to be able to foresee the end of the path my children have chosen for themselves. We know that they can't learn from our mistakes but what if we could tell them what theirs are in advance and they knew we were speaking the truth?I love the magic world that she lives in. The bones are creepy but very cool. Personally, I think the school alone would make great tv. I was completely entertained and can’t wait for the next book to come out already!

I was totally entranced with this story from the beginning to the end. I’ve never read anything like it; the magic and the method employed to use the magic is totally unique. I loved the story. I purposely took longer to read it than normal because I wanted to savor the book as long as possible. I do that only with the very best stories. This was one of the very best stories.

I cannot gush enough about this magic system. This is the kind of system that fantasy nerds get excited about. The tattoos, the bones — A++. And in addition, the plot is unusual — such a fun change from the usual story expectations. The romance was masterfully done (slow-burn and didn’t overtake the plot). Can’t wait for book 2.

This book would be five stars if the main character weren't such an idiot, but I guess if she were wise we wouldn't have a story. I love the cool magic system introduced in this book though! Haven't decided if that's enough to get the sequel, but I probably will.

The premise for this story and the world the author created were unique and intriguing. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the world that is developing in my mind. Many times I found myself rereading particular passages because I so enjoyed her word choice. I can't wait to read the second book when it comes out.

Excellently plotted with great twists and characters. Literally DYING for the next book!

Casi ni leo en inglés pero me animé por una recomendación y no me arrepiento ! Ya estoy esperando la segunda parte en unos días! Amo la historia de Saskia y Bran. Me encantó toda la intriga y toda la acción y que nada es predecible y cuando parece que lo es entonces la autora te sorprende con un giro inesperado. Me dormí a las 4:00 am ayer porque no podía soltarlo. Me gustó que en lugar de ser solo una historia vemos ambas vidas simultáneamente, vas vidas me encantaron y ese final? Uff que final! Hasta derrame lágrimas en mi Kindle.

Quando comecei a lê-lo pensei que não seria mais do que a típico ya novel, com um óbvio triângulo amoroso.No entanto deparei-me com uma história forte, complexa, totalmente inesperada com cenas que nunca li em mais nenhum livro. A escrita também é super trabalhada e bonita. Adorei e irei com certeza comprar o segundo volume da duologia.Quanto à entrega, ela foi super rápida. Comprei o livro numa sexta à noite e na segunda feira seguinte já o estava a receber!
