Can these work in place of the 2 step cleaning tablets?

No. This is specifically for Decalcifying. No cleaning. I have to do both to my machine.

Are these necessary if I have a water softener? My water is not hard at all, but the machine is telling me to decalcify.

Normally, a functioning water softener eliminates the need to decalcify. If you have a Jura Capresso machine you have to tell the machine how hard your water is and then it figures out when to decalcify. The machine does not know how hard your water is; you have to tell it. Detailed instructions are available online for all Jura machines. You can also get a hardness measuring kit from HACH Company and actually measure your water hardness. Then you can set your machine accordingly. This is the safest approach and it is what I do. After almost 10,000 cups made by my Jura Capresso Z9, everything works perfectly. It's good idea to check the functioning of your water softener anyway. If you water hardness is under 4 grains per gallon you can forget decalcification and your softener should easily assure that degree of hardness or less.

Can anyone advise how to use these with a Jura F9?

From the manual (available online) Press the P button. ‘Maintenance status’ (‘1/7’) T Press the ‘Descale’ button. ‘Descale’ T Press the ‘Start’ button. T Press the ‘Start’ button again. ‘Empty drip tray’ 40 5 Maintenance T Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back into the machine. ‘Agent in tank’ T Remove and empty the water tank. T Completely dissolve the contents of one blister (3 JURA des- caling tablets) in a receptacle holding 500 ml of lukewarm water. This may take several minutes. T Pour the solution into the empty water tank and insert it into the machine. ‘Switch open’ T Place a receptacle under the hot-water spout and dual spout. l T y T Turn the switch to the m position. ‘Machine is being descaled’, water flows out of the hot-water spout repeatedly. The operation is interrupted, ‘Switch close’. Turn the switch to the ° position. ‘Machine is being descaled’, the descaling operation is con- tinued. Water flows out of the dual spout repeatedly. The operation is interrupted, ‘Empty drip tray’. l T y T T Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back into the machine. ‘Fill water tank.’ T Empty the receptacle and place it under the hot water and dual spouts. T Remove the water tank and rinse it thoroughly. T Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert the tank. ‘Switch open’ Turn the switch to the m position. ‘Machine is being descaled’, the descaling operation is con- tinued. Will these work for the Jura J6 ?

I looked at the instructions online for your J6 with almost identical cleaning and decalcifying instructions. It appears that the J6 is very similar to my C9. I would think it would work. I put the decalcifying tablets in a plastic measuring cup with the ounces of water called for in the instructions and let them dissolve completely prior to adding them to the water reservoir and then run the decalcifying cycle. I also use the Jura cleaning tablets when my machine is due to be cleaned not decalcified. It seems the cleaning tablets would work for your J6 too. I hope this was helpful. As a side note, I don't use the optional filter on my unit and only decalcify and clean when the maker prompts me.

Keep your Jura in tip-top shape

We have a Jura Z10 that we paid a pretty penny for. We didn't realize that we were going to have to buy so many maintenance items (i.e., these tablets, milk system cleaning solution) for the machine. By the time we figured it out, it was too late...we had already fallen in love with the coffee. So, although we don't love the maintenance costs, we've decided that it's worth it to protect our machine. These descaling tablets seem to do a good job. Some reviews mention that the notification to descale occurs even after using the tablets. We have not run into this issue, which may be due to descaling regularly.

Expensive for what they are probably made of

When you pay so much for a Jura coffee maker, you probably should use the OEM descaling tablets. I do, but only reluctantly. I suspect, I could run vinegar or citric acid (in the correct proportions) for a whole lot less money.
