Waterman!
What can one say. It’s a Waterman. Works as well as the day I first used it

So smooth
I'm not a fountain pen expert, but I loved them in school 50 years ago. I researched and decided on the Waterman Expert 3. I am beyond impressed with this product. Aside from the classic good looks, the pen writes as if on silk right out of the box. I could not be more pleased with this product.

Waterman Customer service is great
So, I bought this pen through Amazon Warehouse and they delivered a broken pen. The feeder under the nib was broken in half such that the nib was floating from the front section of the pen.Next I contacted waterman for warranty support. They paid to ship the pen to France for servicing, replaced the front section and sent the pen back and after they did work on the pen and made it functional. The whole process took about 2.5-3 weeks. Since receiving it back from warranty support the pen is working great. The risk I took on was that if waterman takes more than a month to make a decision and return the pen, then I'm stuck with a broken pen or have to pay out of pocket to get the pen working again.Amazon Warehouse advertised the pen as "Like New," but a New pen that is broken is useless. The people at AZ Warehouse who label the products need to know the difference between new and broken. The price was good, but not good but I had to take a risk and wait about 3 weeks to actually use the product. So, Full marks to Waterman and zero to AZ Warehouse.

A beautiful pen...but it requires expensive cartridges.
This is a beautiful pen, but be aware that it requires expensive cartridges (about $12 for eight of them). The product description does not mention cartridges at all. An $88 Waterman pen, it doesn't say requires cartridges. I think it's reasonable to assume it thus has a filling mechanism. It does not. You can buy a "one size fits all" reservoir insert made by Watermann, but who can trust that!?, it is not guaranteed to it all, it just says it fits all pens sold in the USA. I returned the pen for a refund. No wonder Amazon says this pen is frequently returned.

An overlooked and wonderful fountain pen.
Of my entire fountain pen collection (Pilot VP, Metro, Kaweco Sport, Monteverde Vesuvio, Lamy Safari, TWSBI Eco, Platinum 3776), this hands down is my favorite pen, except for possibly the 3776. Beginning with the look of the pen, it is a great balance of classy and restrained. In particular, the use of gold accents and the shape of the clip just look good. The 24ct gold plate is a noticeable shade different from my other 14ct gold pens, it looks better. The cap snaps off, which is just more convenient than threads, and it posts with an interesting attention to detail and design. The gold accent ring near the top of the pen serves to hold the cap on, and the tolerances are such that the pen cap does not friction fit against the body of the pen, yet is held firmly in place when posted. When posted, the cap free to rotate slightly around the ring- It is hard to describe, but this attention to detail give a nice feel that the pen is of quality. Furthermore, unlike some snap pens (looking at you Metropolitan), the step down from the body to the grip section is quite small and this greatly helps with comfort. The grip section of the pen is plastic, however is not readily apparent against the lacquered brass body and cap (note that because the pen is brass, it can not be made into an eyedropper). The real magic of this pen; however, is the nib. For a steel nib, and even compared with many solid gold nibs, it is nothing short of fantastic. When I first opened the pen, I inserted the included cartridge and wrote with it as soon as I could reassemble. The pen did not miss a beat and has not since in months of use. Not one hard start, or skip (except the most minor of hard starts if the cap is left off for a few minutes). The nib writes with a very unique tactile feel, not at all a roughness, but a sort of pencil like feedback that helps my brain recognize what my hand just did. It makes writing much more effortless than with a glassy smooth nib like the vanishing point, in my experience, and it is unique even to the 3776 which is often described similarily. The nib is rather stiff, so variation is minimal, but this is perfect for a EDC pen imo. The nib writes on the wetter side, but not overly so. Finely unlike most fountain pens, there is no breather hole apparent on the top of the nib (looks like it may be relocated underneath and at the base), and as such there is less nib creep. Therefore, this pen works well with thinner more penetrating inks such as Noodlers' Warden and Bernanke series while still being great with iroshizuku and diamine inks. My only complaint with the pen is that while it allows for a converter, it is not included and the Waterman converter does not fit tightly into the grip. This is nothing more than a personal annoyance and hardly worth mentioning.

Good Quality Fountain Pen
Waterman pens are consistently good quality. I have several Waterman ballpoint pens that are excellent. This Waterman Fountain pen does not disappoint. The ink flows smoothly from pen to paper with no gaps. It has a quality feel and professional look plus it is fairly priced. If you purchase this pen, you won’t be disappointed.

Updated review
Great pen! I know it's expensive, but the quality is VERY good. I have a number of inexpensive fountain pens and they all have issues after a short time. Not so far with this Waterman.Update 3/2/24: Had a issue with the cap getting loose while in my shirt pocket. In the past, it snapped in place with a solid click. In December, (9 months after buying the pen) the cap pushes on very loosely and comes off the same way. It stated they have a 3 year warrenty. I have reached out to Waterman customer servive since December 2023. After emailing and calling them 2-3 times, they finally got back and emailed a prepaid mailing lable to UPS to France. They then emailed me a quote for $45.00 to repair the tip in February! There was nothing wrong with the tip. I appealed and they took another month to again send me aa quote for $45.00 repair bill. I finally paid the $45.00 just to get my pen back. Very disappointed.
