Pillow Wad Barley Straw

I feel like I must have bought this in a hurry and not checked the description to find out if it contained grass seeds, seeing that others have used it for mulch as well.Well it DOES contain grass seeds. I have had a few pop through and they aren't the easiest things to dig out once their roots have dug in deep. I also probably need to use more of it but it's rather bulky and doesn't sit as flat as I would like. It would take too long and be too annoying to pick through it myself before applying it to the pots so I have put it to one side for now.Having said that, I have noticed a difference in pots I have munched with this and ones that I haven't. They definitely retain water better, which I knew would happen but I also wasnt expecting such a difference. On a very hot day you can see the difference without even touching the soil.This product is probably better used for other things. I would not use this for mulch again, especially for growing in pots. I would look for something smaller/less bulky, and that definitely DIDN'T contain seeds.

I read reviews that people had used this to bed their strawberries so I purchased with confidence. Unfortunately my once strong, healthy plants are suffering due to the amount of barley growth I now have in the bed! Also within 2 weeks fungus was growing under the strawberries and all my hard work is being undone - I wish I'd never put any straw down.I would be really angry if I'd used it as pet bedding as it must have been full of spores

Just standard straw for my rabbits really. Nothing special and nothing bad either apart from cost. I had to purchase this as my rabbits had ran out and I’m in lockdown so couldn’t get to the pet shop. Would’ve been a lot cheaper at the pet shop as I like to buy it in bulk. This will do for now however now lockdown rules have slightly relaxed I will be going to the pet shop to get it next time. Came on time. Doesn’t have a bad smell. Packaging is standard for a bag of straw.

I bought this bale of barley straw for two reasons. 1 - to refill a special weighted pond container with a lid, as barley straw helps keep blanket weed away and aids the pond flora. It takes about a month to start breaking downs to help - you start putting it in your pond in about February. 2 - it will be put around strawberry plants to keep the berries off the soil. After both uses the straw will then go on the compost heap.I was surprised at the size of the bale that I received - about 48cm x 34cm x 14cm. It is difficult to imagine what 2kgs is going to be, in size. This is the same size big bale that we used to get for our rabbit - he used to love munching on the barley straw. It hasn't been chopped up into tiny pieces but has been left in its longer strands and smells lovely and fresh. The price of £4.61 is great in my opinion.

I used this for my garden to protect my strawberries and mulching my other fruit trees/plants.I only purchased this after reading peoples reviews that it's also good for plants. Unfortunately I now have loads of weeds growing from it ( when googled it says it a variety of grass) growing from the actual straw pieces. The roots are strong g so quite difficult to pull them out without leaving any roots its growing fast and everywhere. I dont know if this is normal with all straw used for strawberries but it's a massive pain.
