Q: Do these require any padding or nesting material? If so, what is used that will not prevent the egg from rolling?

If they have a choice between one w a little straw and one without they prefer the one with. After a habit is developed it doesn't matter much. There is about a 2 in lip in front to retain the eggs.

Q: We have lots of wild chickens running around. Is there a way to attract them to this?

Yes you can meel worms. Sprinkle on the ground in the areas you usually see them. Then next day sprinkle closer and closer to the nesting boxes. They are curious so the may only look at it for several days but eventually the will start resting then nesting in the boxes. Keep sparkling a few meel worms to keep them coming. Eventually they will stick around, even recognize you are bringing the treats and come running

Q: What is the measurement between the back of the box and the perches when they are fully extended? TIA

The nesting box measures 13" from the back of the box to front of the box frame and 21" total from the back of the box to the front of the perch/lid.

Q: Is this leak/water proof? Does it need to be sheltered?

The box it's self doesn't leak but it does have vents on the sides and the front and back are both open. So rain will get in. I recommend you putting this under some type of shelter ,yes.
