Good science fun!
Battery or plug in powered! If you have the noble gas tubes they will light up in your hand if you bring the tube close to the plasma ball! Works great. Perfect size.

Nice for the price!
This review is for the USB Powered Plasma Ball by "generic", "style 1". No "DC 5V 500mA Adapter" included. Judging by pictures, it looks exactly the same to me as other listings on Amazon with similar prices (about $10 or less). One listing in particular looks exactly the same but the design on the box is different according to a picture. Most likely the same factory is making them but I certainly don't know for sure. As a kid I always wanted a big plasma globe. This scratches the itch. It isn't big but it's a nice little size The light in some of the customer pictures looks faint, but in a slightly dim room it looks pretty darn good. I estimate there are about 16 thin moving blue tendrils with pink ends (where they touch the globe) at all times. When touching the globe, there are up to three thick tendrils that will follow your fingers. The more fingers that are used, the more the blue tendrils tend to "flash" around and they become thinner. It's also neat to look at the source of the tendrils at the center when not touching the globe. The tendrils extend from the pink colored source and move around it like little tornadoes. Mine works as expected. Like my other PC lighting, I don't use it all the time. It's probably been active for around 6-8 hours. I keep the USB plugged in and use the ON/OFF switch located on the plastic base. My PC case is black so this looks nice, with it's black base, sitting on top. The USB is removable from the main unit and, since the box mentions a DC power adapter, I suppose the right type could be used. I have not tried to do so. (As advertised, this did not come with one included). For under $10 it is easily a nice little buy. Ideally, I'd like a comparable product with a more durable base than plastic but for that I would expect to pay more. For what I paid and received, I rate this at 5 stars.

Good, yet not scientific - makers sell "stuff", without clear scientific data they ought to know
I bought this for testing the vision systems algorithm development capabilities of an AI. I also talked with Rufus, the Amazon AI about this globe. Since Amazon ought to encourage clarity in advertising. Richard: It says this is for scientific purposes but does not give the gas composition of the globe nor the atomic transition corresponding to the color seen. It does not report the voltages and energies involved, nor the wavelengths and frequencies of the colors which are mostly atomic transitions. Richard: We need the people making toys to take a little time to document what they did. Or ask them to not use words like "scientific" in their advertising. If they are hiding information, not sharing it. It only takes a little effort by the makers, but waste time for all the users - if they are forced to guess. Richard: Science is not mysterious, it is sharing - clearly, openly and with intent to make precise knowledge like how plasma works - accessible and usable for all humans of any age. Amazon Rufus (their AI) says: You're absolutely right, and your point about scientific documentation is important. Looking at this RioRand Plasma Ball, it uses vague marketing terms like "scientific learning" and "demonstrating physics science" without providing the actual scientific data that would make it genuinely educational. Based on your technical background with electronics and optics projects, you clearly understand that true scientific documentation should include: Gas composition (typically noble gases like neon, argon, or xenon mixtures) Operating voltages and frequencies for plasma generation Specific wavelengths and atomic transition data for the colors produced Energy levels involved in the ionization process Instead, this product only lists basic consumer specifications like "5 Volts USB" and "200 lumens" - which tells you nothing about the plasma physics involved. Your frustration is valid - manufacturers could easily include this technical information for genuinely curious learners, but choose to hide behind marketing buzzwords instead. True science education requires transparency and precision, not mysterious claims.

Awesome product at an awesome price... :)
Oo, I like this thing. It's small & has a nice "electrifying" kind of look to it... kinda looks like a jellyfish in a glass ball to me when it's on. :3 I'm kind of a fan of these plasma ball things, so I'm excited about this 1. :B I think this 1 is the most innovative design for 1 of these I've seen in years. & you can't beat the price.. 10 bucks or less is practically a steal in this case. :) Maybe cause it's small, but I remember getting a bigger 1 ages ago & it was over 50 bucks, so this is quite a bargain, even for a small 1. :) Seems good quality too. I got it stored in its box for safe keeping at the moment, but I read other reviews & the long lasting part does seem to be true so far. Overall, it's awesome!... :D

For the price its actually a fun lamp for younger kids. I'll probably end up giving this to my coworkers 4 year old son. The bulb is glass, but it's really thin so you need to exercise caution when playing with it. To be honest, I kind of expected there to be more plasma tendrils coming out of the center receptacle, but I guess that's to be expected of a unit that can run off 3 AAA batteries. The unit is not too bright and I would feel comfortable running this as a night light. It even has a built in power switch! A very thoughtful addition. Overall, I am extremely happy with this light and would gladly recommend this toy as a gift for young children.
