This is a great little fire starter. I bought it to teach my kids how to properly start a fire and understand the basics of fire safety and survival skills. We practiced together and went over what materials work best and how to do it safely. I hope they never actually need to use it in a real situation, but life can throw unexpected surprises your way. I’d rather they know how to handle it than be unprepared. Simple, reliable, and a good tool for teaching practical skills.

After getting the outer covering off, these work really well. They are a bit small so for carrying in a backpack or where space is limited the smaller size is a plus. It is so important to have multiple back ups to starting a fire in survival type situations. I started a fire using a paper towel and didn't even need to shave off the Magnesium but could have if needed. Great Value for the money especially when your out freezing in the woods or need to cook some food or boil water. I have them in my motorcycle packs and jeeps.

I purchased these to have on hand for emergency situations. They are legitimate fire starting items that work as advertised. However, these items are very small and difficult to hold while using. The upside is that they are very light and packable though I don't see them lasting through a lot of use. They are adequate for my needs and priced affordably.

I used to carry a regular lighter in my daily bag as an emergency prep item, but I always worried about lighter fluid spilling from it if the flimsy plastic casing was broken. I usually kept it in a Ziploc bag, to at least contain any spills, but it really wasn't preferable. I stumbled upon the manual fire starters, like these magnesium sticks, that are advertised as an emergency survival item. I think that this item is perfect. It is really small and portable, with no risk of carrying around in daily bags, so it is perfect for cooking while camping or if stranded somewhere. The item says that it can be used many times, as only a small amount of magnesium flakes is needed to ignite wood. I have not tried to use it yet, but I have no doubt that the lighter will be easy to use based upon the provided instructions. I am very glad to have found this item and I carry it with me everywhere for emergency preparedness. I have purchased this set for myself, and I gave the second lighter as a gift. Bought one for personal use and another one as a gift. It works very well, with a good quality spark. Palm-sized item, can be carried while camping. Burns really good. NIce to have this one, satisfied overall. ^-^

This set of magnesium fire-starting kits were a great deal! For the price, I didn't have high expectations but I was pleasantly surprised. In no time, I had a small pile of very fine magnesium shavings. The scraper was more resilient than I thought it would be and it took quite a bit of pressure without bending. One side of the magnesium has an embedded striker flint that extends the full length of the block. It was easy to strike a spark but it's not clear how well-secured the striker flint actually is. Time will tell. I guess a set of 2 gives you a backup just in case. The kit also comes with a 20" length of paracord that contains at its core a red waterproof flax fire tinder which can be helpful when conditions aren't ideal. I couldn't help but notice that my scraper's handle is orange whereas the listing shows it in black. Not a big deal to me but something to be aware of. All the same, I definitely recommend this set!

I ordered this to play around with and see how difficult it is to start a fire with one. It's a fun conversation piece around our backyard firepit; if you have never used one, it will take a little practice. Once you understand how to use it, it works very well for starting a fire with dry paper or tinder. This would be an excellent plan B backup to keep in your backpack if your matches get wet or your lighter stops working. My only advise would be to learn how to use it before you need it!
