Works with many MIDI keyboards and then some
I've tested this device with the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band 3 along with three different midi keyboards, including a Wii Rock Band Keyboard, and they all work flawlessly. With a switch on the adapter, the game recognizes what instrument you plan to use for Rock Band 3, and the adapter translates all MIDI notes played into an acceptable note in the game. In the case of the keyboard, which was all I had to test, the game looks for some two octave range to play on, so keeping the default octave range on the midi keyboard is necessary. As for the "whammy", I only recognized the touch strip on my Wii Keyboard as a probable control for modulation, but I had to hold the overdrive button on my keyboard to use the touch strip which was a little bothersome. An overdrive button is included on the adapter, and it also comes with a belt clip, so playing the keyboard with the adapter hooked on my belt was comfortable...if the usb cord was long enough. If you plan to play in a theater or far away from the TV, make sure you get some usb extension cables. Don't worry about the required MIDI cable; you only need enough depending on the length from the instrument to your other hand to access the adapter's overdrive button, so get the smallest Male to Male MIDI cable you can find. As for those controls on the adapter, they're needed to navigate within the Xbox menu and throughout the Rock Band menus. In addition, the Xbox treats the adapter as a wired Xbox controller without triggers, bumpers, or analog sticks. I was able to get away playing a few Xbox Live Arcade titles which did not require those features (and not many do), so it's pretty versatile despite its primary goal being to emulate MIDI devices. If you have some sort of MIDI keyboard that is not officially for the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band 3 and want to play with it in game, and if you're missing a simple Xbox 360 controller, this adapter is worthwhile, especially while the game's still alive and knocked down in price.

Works Perfectly With Cheap Instruments
I had been contemplating purchasing the Mad Catz keyboard for Rock Band 3 for sometime but then having a few keyboards around the home went for this instead and couldn't be more happy with this purchase. Nothing I have is on the official list but reading of others success figured to give it a try. After some initial stupidity trying to get the controller to work, hooked it up to a Yamaha EZ-150 and works perfectly. Of course I suck at it as keyboards were never my thing but adds a whole other aspect to the game and is very fun. Also have an Awowo LD-110 electronic drum that I purchased awhile back for cheap. Having a midi in/out I thought what the heck, hook it up and see what happens. At first nothing but once I turned up the velocity adjustment wheel adjusting the sensitivity it works! YAY!! Played around with it for about an hour and am very pleased with my results using these cheap drums. Highly recommended piece of hardware to enhance you Rock Band 3 playing.

Sweet new old stock
Thank you for this item. It came brand new and worked great. My family played rock band all night for the holidays. This is new old stock. The plastic is sticky but it did not bother me. I hook this up to a Roland electric drum set.

Sticky and smelly but gets the job done (and you don't have any other options, do you?)
Yup. It's gross to touch it. To be clear, the issue only seems to affect the "top" of the main body of the adapter. The back is fine. Flip it over, unscrew the 6 or so screws (most hidden under pads). 4 more screws to remove the board and dump all the buttons out. If you've ever taken a 360 controller apart before, this shouldn't be intimidating in any way. Just be careful of the wires that connect the midi port to the main board... they can apparently break off if you aren't gentle. Wash with 91% isopropyl alcohol and a rag/q-tips. May leave a little white residue in corners and crevices, but leaves the labeling on the adapter mostly legible. Let it dry and then put it all back together. Doesn't feel sticky, doesn't smell, and most importantly: let's me rock out with a real keyboard!

Works but sticky and smelly out the box
Good price, arrived quickly, and definately works as intended on my electronic yamaha dtx500 kit and rock band 3 on the xbox360. Out of the box it was pretty plug and play, the only minor adjustment i had to make (using the dtx interface) was i had to change the MIDI note value for one of the cymbols so that i could have a working "green" cymbol. Seriously easy otherwise. So the product, i have no problem giving 5 stars. Oddly, however, eventhough it arrived in a sealed package it was... oozy? The top rubber face was super sticky and gave off a very foul, lingering odor. Nothing 10 minutes of rubbing alcohol and cotton balls didn't more-or-less solve but it still smells a bit foul and now the top face looks really dried out. Works great though otherwise so i will continue to use it as it was intended. I wonder if this occured due to the age of the product and how it was stored? Who knows.

Does what it's meant to do
This is just an adapter, into which you can plug a real instrument (a midi guitar, keyboard, or drum kit.) It will then act as an XBox controller, allowing you to use that instrument when playing Rock Band 3. You can also buy them for other game systems. It does exactly what it's meant to do, I've had no issues or problems. It has the standard buttons and controls. It also has a "clip" that lets it sit on a belt, the edge of a music stand, etc. - that same clip can be removed and attached at a different angle to let it attach to the base of a guitar (which is how I have mine connected) - that way the adapter becomes "part of the guitar" and you don't need to worry about having an extra device to trip over. (Speaking of tripping, it uses cables, not wireless. But it doesn't need its own batteries, although the instrument you're plugging in might.)

This adapter works great for connecting any drum kit (or guitar or keyboards) with a midi out to an XboX (PS3 models available). Its light but durable (dropped it a time or two with no problems). Nice hook and/or strap; great to secure it to the drum's frame. All button present so there is no need to use an additional controller to manage the menus. Switch to change from drum to guitar to keyboard, and the sensativity wheel is great for adusting the kit to prevent double hits or missed hits. I would definately recommend this.

Grazie ancora Amazon.

Well I finally got my rock band 3 pro setup sorted out. This is so much harder than I expected, but also because its so annoying in some ways. How it shows chords is pretty bad, I expected it to look more like tab and not be judging finger location based on the high of a coloured bar. That said its still worth a try. I am using this with a YRG-1000 guitar and its working just fine.
