Do the prongs get bigger as the gap size increases?

The gap between the prongs is the same, regardless of whether you use 2, 4 or 6 prong tool. If you want a bigger gap than the one these create, you will need to use the single prong only. The more the prongs are hammered through the leather, the bigger the holes produced become, as the prongs are tapered.

Are the prongs smooth or jagged?

Prongs are smooth not barbed. However some times the tines/teeth are ground at 90 degrees to the shaft and at other times angled. But they are always parallel to each other. Hope that helps.

Can these be used on rucksack straps - nylon black webbing, i need to replace and stitch some new buckles on the straps

Accepted Answer

These are used to pierce holes in leather and similar materials. Nylon webbing already has holes by the very nature of its weaving so you shouldn't need to create any extra holes, there is also the danger of cutting the nylon strands that make up the webbing so that it will fray or unravel. If you need to punch holes for the buckle prong to go through then its best to use something like a thin (same thickness as the prong) soldering iron or a heated nail to push through the webbing so that it melts the nylon (or similar material) to make a sealed hole what won't fray. You can sow the buckle onto the webbing using strong cotton or thin cord using an ordinary needle of suitable size for the cotton/cord being used. Probably need to seal the webbing ends by using a soldering iron or similar to prevent unraveling, or a heated knife blade to cut a shaped tip. Trust his helps.

what diameter are the prongs?

The prongs are not really circular. It is  kind of tiny leaf shape point (approx 2mm) that creates a slit in the leather not a punched hole. On some soft leather I was using this makes the incision close up nicely around the thread.
