Does the cam have teeth or grooves? Is it rough on the rope?

The cam doesn't have sharp teeth like most, but does have rounded ridges to grab the rope. I wouldn't be concerned about it damaging a rope sheath if you're using it as intended (not as a fall assessor).

Would this work on a lineman’s rope for like say putting up tree stands?

Absolutely. That is what I use it for. Works perfectly.
