We heat mainly with wood, with an oil fired furnace backup. Some of the wood that we have this year seems to have more moisture than other pieces, so we went ahead and ordered this little guy;. It's proven to be accurate and lets us know if we think some of the wood needs more drying time adjacent to the stove. Considering the price, it's a great value for the $$$.

This seems to work ok, but they say this will measure moisture for 50 different species. But, there is no list of the species, or the group they belong to. All I can find are the 24 listed in the manual. I'm using this for woodworking. I already have two hardwood species on hand that this doesn't list. And considering that walnut is in a different table than maple or cherry or padauk, I don't know where to classify them (purpleheart and wenge). I can guess, but I don't like guessing. Probably going to return it.

I wanted this to check moisture in sand in my blast cabinet and in my firewood. It is fairly priced, shipped quickly and arrived before expected date. It is very EASY to operate. If I bought firewood (i cut my own), this will save you from buying unseasoned firewood. it also allowed me to make sure my firewood was properly seasoned. My seasoned ash firewood tests at about 10 to 12 percent humidity. Unseasoned wood tested at about 25 to 40 percent. Operation is simple. It asks what species of wood you're testing. (Dont worry if you aren't sure. I tested my ash on all four available types and it only varied 1 or 2 percent)Once you've picked one of four types on "mode", stick the two little probes in the wood and read the result. If this can save you from buying one or more cords of unseasoned firewood, it will pay for itself. I also use it on my own firewood. I try to keep seasoned wood separate from unseasoned but this devices ends guessing.

Shows reading in percentage and is useful as a comparative study of moisture content due to water seepage leakage in buildings.
