5-String Bass: Taking Your Playing to New Lows, Book & Online Audio (National Guitar Workshop) [Ray, Sharon] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. 5-String Bass: Taking Your Playing to New Lows, Book & Online Audio (National Guitar Workshop) Review: great book - very instructional, very intuitive, and detailed illustration, and a good review of regular bass techniques and organized 5-bass skills, and more importantly, it also teaches lots of non-bass techniques, such as arranging, orchestration, rhythm, and so on. Correspondent audio is good to listen too. Review: A must have. - This is a excellent book to start you on your way to understanding the basics of bass playing. No other book I have bought, with all the available scales have included the proper fingering for the scales. It is important to have proper fingering. Also all the combination of finger strengthen exercises are included. This should never be taken for granted. Intervals, Diatonic harmony; triads, 7th chords are discussed. And few other things. This is a really good book to have. Kudos Sharon Ray.

Not for the novice
Not a bad book. I've been playing a little more than a year on a 4 string. I just bought a 5 string and wanted some resources for my new guitar. As stated in the other review it does have some good exercises in it and probably would have not purchased Bass Fitness if I had not bought them together (that free shipping always gets me to buy more!). It has examples of all major music styles, but they're not for the beginner. I would, however, still recommend the book to those who have more experience than I do.

5-String Bass
Most Bass books assume you have a 4-string bass and I was looking for a book that would move me from 4-string lessons to using the fifth string. I'm just beginning on the bass and can't tell how much help this book will be, but it seems to be what I will need.

A great book to get my fingers all over the fretboard for sure.
I have been thrilled with this book helping me to transition from 4 string bass to 5, and find that it has been helping me know my 4 string bass world like I never experienced it too.

Well done guide for absolute beginners
Actually, the book seems to be written for absolute beginners starting their studies right from the buying of 5-string bass. In this case tons of knowledge about rhythm and tone basics would be quite useful. But if you're really more or less experienced "4-string player ready to move on to the world of 5-string playing" this book would scarcely satisfy all your needs. It could let you touch the ground, but to dig deeply you need another guides.

This is not a beginners book but does include a comprehensive beginners introduction. The great thi k I like about this book is. It does Not keep rambling about 4 strings this, than or other. It treats the 5 string like an independent Instrument in its own right. Perfect as its one of the few books that does. I love this Lady and her approach. 3 months of learning basics and my technique is growing along with neck knowledge. Bargain for the price along with online audio easy to find and can be downloaded to cell for use anywhere.

Clearly written, very understandable and comprehensive book. Deals more with a conversion from already being able to play a 4 string bass, and not learning on a 5 string from scratch.
