Can sandvik inserts be used in these and if so to they hold the insert very well?

Yes I use sandvik and seco both work fine these lathe tools work great and you can't beat the price...

Im trying to find Christmas gifts for my husband that don’t suck. How will i know if these will fit his lathe?

You'd have to measure his tool holder and compare to the size of the shanks on these tools (apparently 5/8"), to be sure they'd fit inside. Alternately, you could measure the tools he has already, where they fit in the tool holder (the "clamp" that holds them when they're cutting). His lathe might be able to take larger tools than he's using now, though.
