random number generator ?
I am a Master electrician and hold a class "A" TACL license and have been using meters for 20 years. This meter is really nice, but it does have a strange feature of running through random numbers while testing un-energized circuits.. I had to carry 2 meters around with me the 1st few months I owned this thing.. I didn't trust it because of all the random number generation while in AC voltage test mode... I have been searching for technical support or others who own this thing, but have found little. The unstable nature of this meter in voltage test mode takes some getting used to... Sometimes when it senses real voltage the light comes on and it beeps, but it takes a certain voltage to trigger this comforting feature.. Field Piece may have always been made like this. I have always used Fluke, Ideal, even SQ D WAY back in the tester days...They read "0" volts when the circuit being tested is dead. The field peice reads whatever it feels like generating, which is unsetteling when I am using this thing to safe gaurd against personal injury, death and equipment damage... Other than that one REALLY weird feature I really like the thing... If some one knows something that I don't, I would love feedback. Maybe I am missing something...

Great meter
Bought it to test capacitors and it does a great job. Easy to use due to auto ranging. Big bright display. Seems very accurate when comparing to other meters I have. A bit expensive but it is pretty nice and works well.I did have, what I thought was an odd reading, so I called customer service and they put me in touch with a very knowledgeable tech that walked me through it. Considering I am not an HVAC tech I thought was above and beyond customer service. Can't ask for more than that. Great company, great meter.

Phantom voltage readings on open circuits, can be very misleading
I've been using this thing for two years as an HVAC/R service tech. As others have said, if you are testing an open circuit, the meter will throw random numbers at you, as if it's fishing for voltage. It's otherwise an accurate meter. There have been times I'm looking for 24 volts, and it displays a number close to what I'm looking for. If you don't pay close attention it can really throw you off while doing diagnostic work. There's a bar at the bottom of the screen (don't know what its called) that increases with a better "signal": if it's barely registering, it's phantom voltage. about 50% or more, it's definitely accurate. If the voltage is high enough, you will also get a red light and noise (high-v warning) to let you know that you for sure have voltage and the numbers on the screen are accurate. Also, I've also found that every single person I have ever allowed to use my meter, also becomes confused... "there's 100v here".. no there's no power. You have to learn how to read this meter. I've gotten good at knowing what it's telling me, and I can trust it. Another set of eyes will be wary of what the meter is reading. I've definitely pulled out another meter on many occasions, particularly with low voltage stuff. Also, after 2 years, my amp clamp no longer works. Not sure if its the meter or the clamp, but it will give me insanely high amperage readings. Got two years out of it though. When it comes time for a new meter, I will be shopping for something else. Personally, I would pass on this meter.

Practical but has flaws. Read on
Summary: its practical and has all the functions but it doesnt get the small stuff right for the price. This is a good meter. Its durable. It measure capacitance. It has NCV and thats very practical. The detachable leads are practical. The interchangeable Heads are practical. The lead storage is... Practical. The bag storage is really nice. The magnetic hanger is practical. Those are alot of good things.... But.. it has flaws with the small things that other meters get righy. When you switch it to VA/C your reading a bunch of millivolts on the screen.. from what, the Air? This problem really becomes annoying when you just want to confirm a circuit is and itll give you reading of ghost voltage. This meter doesnt have a low impedence feature. Which the much cheaper fluke 116 has. This will get rid of ghost voltage and give you "useable" info. Techs dont need to see milivolts on a screen. They just need to see 0 or 120v.This flaw happens with amps and capacitance. This doesn't promote confidence in its accuracy. If you can deal this flaw then buy this meter.

Maintenance
Great product. I use it mainly for refirgation/HVAC. Continuity feature is a plus. Most of my usage is checking temperature readings and continuity testing. After using fluke I prefer this product better, the backlight it a big help when testing. No regrets, definitely recommend.

Hit or miss
Bought because my boss has the same one, ghost voltage was really bad. The one I purchased was never read the right voltage, we compared the two meters. Tested with one then tested the same thing with the other. Mine was way off, resistance setting didn’t even work. And I know that for a fact because the other meter was the same one and could see the voltage fine. Maybe mine was defective but still spend 240$ I expect a decent quality meter. It’s hit or miss with these meters.

Fieldpiece HS36
Nice concept of expandability, also later purchased the dual port manometer accessory head. After time I have found the stand alone meters to be more accurate. Being able to check running amps of a blower motor with the door in place is a nice feature. I absolutely love the SC640 clamp meter I purchased more recently.

Good But...
Good meter but it wont read start capacitors cuz of the resistor on the terminals and it's a pain to have to unplug my leads and plug in the amp clamp just to take amp draws. My Milwaukee fork meter has this meter beat and was half the price. As an HVAC service tech I think I'll stick with Milwaukee but the ability to use the variety of head attachments for this meter is definitely useful so I'll be keeping it in my tool bag but it's definitely not my go to multimeter.
