Q: Is the fan able to be connected to a dimmer to lower the power of the fan or will that damage the motor?

By golly, that's exactly how I use it. I installed it in my desk's computer compartment with a typical dining room lamp dimmer dial/switch to control the speed. At full speed it's a little louder than I like, but it's quite tolerable at the lower speeds. It does a nice job, though, producing plenty of circulation to keep my over-powered CPU from overheating.

Q: Can't find a dimmer that works. What do you use that's listed on Amazon?

I see no reason why you could not mount this fan in any position you want. It has completely sealed bearings and this would allow any position mounting.
