Product Description George Stevens' D-Day To Berlin (DVD)Academy Award(R) winning director George Stevens' personal and comprehensive documentary of World War II, from the invasion of Normandy to the fall of Berlin. Photographed in color for the first time. Written, produced and narrated by George Stevens, Jr. Director: George Stevens Starring: George Stevens, Jr.]]> desertcart.com Some of the most vivid, indelible images of World War II can be found in George Stevens: D-Day to Berlin. Along with an Army-enlisted band of Hollywood veterans known as "The Stevens Irregulars" (including cameramen Joseph Biroc and William Mellor, screenwriter Ivan Moffat, novelist Irwin Shaw, and others), the great director of Gunga Din traveled from the shores of Normandy to the ruins of occupied Berlin, capturing pivotal episodes of history on home-movie magazines of Kodak color film, which his son later crafted into this riveting 46-minute documentary. The narration by Stevens Jr. is rather listless, and other voiceover contributors from the "Irregular" crew are not specifically identified, but their visual account speaks for itself, with unforgettable images of liberated Paris on August 25, 1944 ("the greatest day of my life," said Stevens Sr.); the surrender of 320,000 troops in Germany's Army Company B; the wretched aftermath of the Battle of the Bulge; the discovery of a gigantic underground V-1 bomb factory in Nordhausen, Germany; Hitler's mountain hideaway in Berchtesgaden; and, most horrifically, piles of corpses at the Dachau concentration camp. The color images remain crisp and remarkably lifelike, as if they were shot just yesterday, bringing even greater significance and poignant importance to footage that will surely stand forever as a testament to some of humanity's brightest and darkest hours. --Jeff Shannon Review: A MASTERFUL DOCUMENTARY BY A MASTER MOVIE DIRECTOR ... IN COLOR! - WWII history is NOT being taught in schools today which is one reason I bought this documentary by master movie director George Stevens. I’m showing this to my adult children and my grandchildren so they have the truth of what America did in WWII to defeat evil in the world and stand for Peace where people like Adolph Hitler and Emperor Hirohito wanted to destroy men, women, and children in the name of power. A MUST addition to any DVD library and the only WWII documentary shot with color film. Review: When The Allies freed France from German Occupation - Since this is an actual Film of action taken by the Allies freeing France from Nazi rule . You see how France/Britain/USA/Russia coordinated together . The grandeur of the parade after France was freed and the 29th Army division marched through the heart of Paris . I think of the class the American Generals having General Charles De Gaulle receive their salutes . That’s why they are known as the greatest generation .

The Real War in color
These are Mr. Stevens's home movies of his own activities during WWII. They are not Hollywood stock. Many important events ate shown while they happen, e.g. liberation marches into Paris. The gro, and ghastly and poignant are thereunfortunatelyly not enough minutes but I was glad to have viewed the fil and ill again and again. Highly recommended.

Much of the the most graphic footage we have all become a custom to DOES NOT REALLY tell the story
Most of the film footage of the June 6th landing on Omaha Beach does not tell anything close to the HORRIFIC scene that was the reality of that day. This DVD footage presents a more accurate picture. Some of the people who were there with their cameras where actually killed along with the troops landing on the beach. Everybody who has seen "Saving Private Ryan" gets a more accurate picture of what it really was like. This DVD shows more of the actual events that actually happened because it comes after the Army toned down the footage to make it easier to show to the general public who had son's who were there and the Army was more concerned about the sensitives of the general public than showing a more accurate picture of those who made the ULTIMATE SACRIFICE.

Top quality
Top quality full-color DVD made from 16mm color film of the European Theater during the final year of World War II. Obviously only bits and pieces of many moments but the images are so fresh that they seem current rather than dating from the 1940s. Those young faces all have passed into history and our nation's memory, and can now be found at rest in our National Cemeteries.

The Real War
I think it is a shame that more color footage of WW2 does not exist. I believe that color really brings out the reality of war. The people we see become more real in color. The scenes of devastation take on a deeper meaning, when they are viewed in color. More recent conflicts have been filmed in color, but to this viewer, WW2 was a defining moment in world history. It deserved to be shot in color. One gets a better understanding of what the countryside really looked like in color. In my view, this dvd is well worth buying, for the color shots alone. JRV
