Great book! I have a seven year old who was recently diagnosed with a severe form of epilepsy. In order to keep his seizures under control he is on 6 anticonvulsants, several of which have negative behavioral side effects (especially Kepprage- aggression, defiance, and manipulative behavior). Before his diagnosis he was a happy go lucky kid, but due to the medications we have had to adjust our parenting strategies- the suggestions in this book have helped tremendously. I feel more in control of my own emotions and behavior and am able to better help prevent my son's pharmaceutically induced meltdowns. I have seen many books that aim to help parents dealing with ADHD, with epilepsy, etc., but never one targeted towards parents whose children's behaviors are pharmaceutically induced (it's harder to discipline them when you know your child is misbehaving because of the medication he's on). Even though this book wasn't targeted towards pharmaceutically induced behaviors, the strategies provided are sound, and work for me and my child. I'm glad to have found this book!

Clear, readable, and helpful!
Jed Baker writes with honesty, humility and heart and captures the helplessness we all feel when children have emotional outbursts. In No More Meltdowns, Baker shows how to prevent, intervene and respond, so that children feel safe and relationships of love and trust are restored and maintained. I am a huge fan of all of Baker's work, and this book is a jewel that I have shared with many families and friends. His books are clearly written and highly readable.Ondine Gross, School Psychologist and Author of Restore the Respect: How to Mediate School Conflicts and Keep Students Learning

Informative yet slightly redundant
The strategies are excellent, but the chapter formatting is a little redundant, where strategies overlap. It is great for beginners, but having been formally trained in elements of behavior modification, I found the redundancy to be more taxing.

No More Meltdowns
Absolutely the best book written by anyone on how to cope appropriately with childrens' emotional/behavioral meltdowns! Dr. Backer is a highly qualified and experienced psychologist and parent whose book helps parents and teachers to distinguish between tantrums and meltdowns. He gives simple descriptions and examples to help adults understand the situations in which a child's meltdowns occur and how they may not only handle the child's behavior but also foresee such behavior occurring in the future and plan how to prevent and/or appropriately and successfully handle these events. The author also provides forms which may be copied to guide and assist parents and teachers. As a clinical child psychologist myself I highly recommend this book for all parents and teachers and particularly for parents and teachers of vulnerable children e.g. ADHD, Asperger's, PDD NOS, and others on the autistic spectrum.

very very helpful book!!
This is such a helpful book - I would recommend it for any age group - I work with adults with developmental disabiliites, and these strategies have been very easy to follow and extremely helpful in understanding motivations for behaviors as well as when it is not an appropriate learning moment and when it is. Wonderful book & very well written. I loved that he added examples of times when his strategies did not work well and he had to find a different approach - it's nice to see that even experts are not perfect everytime.

Not what I thought that it would be
After 2 year old was diagnosed autistic I was recommended this book but really did not find it that helpful. That is just me and maybe when he gets a little older I will read it again but for now not helpful.

Informative, quick read!
I enjoyed reading this book as an occupational therapist. I think Dr. Baker does a good job of targeting meltdowns from a mutli-disciplinary perspective. He addresses sensory processing while also looking at behavioral components and provides several helpful charts and information for parents. Meltdowns are such a common concerns with many of my kiddos who have trouble with sensory processing and this is a great resource to help ease the stress and difficulty related to them.

Buy This Book!!!
This is an amazing book! I have a six year old daughter with Autism who has major meltdowns and I've read and tried everything under the sun with no success. That all changed when we implemented the ideas in Jed Baker's book. It is a quick read loaded with proven techniques for managing many behavior problems. So many books I've read in the past provide you with theories that are not so easy to implement. This book gives you step-by-step instructions for improving countless behavior problems. If you are struggling with meltdowns, do yourself a favor and purchase this book, it truly is the answer you've been looking for!

Bought this book to help us understand and manage our 5 yr old granddaughter's behaviour as traditional ways didn't seem to be helping her or us. It works!!His methods are mostly common sense and good forward planning but sometimes when you are coping with behaviours on a daily basis you forget to be practical and become caught up in the moment and the stress of not knowing what to do for the best can take over. There is so much conflicting advice out there and when the traditional methods don't work you can sometimes feel you've failed and end up demoralised!!The book talks you through different scenarios and gives very clear and positive strategies for dealing with various behaviour issues. It allowed us to take a step back and look at things from a different angle. It feels good to be proactive and although you won't stop the tantrums or behaviours completely we found big improvements in the length of time they last and frequently we can diffuse the situation and avoid the behaviour all together. It feels good. She is much happier knowing that even when she's not feeling in control, we are.

Well laid out and easy to follow
My copy of this is full of sticky tabs and highlights. I found it really informative with good explanations and written in a very easy to read way with chapter summaries and recaps.
