what does "student grade" mean really?

"Student Grade" oil paint means it is economically priced when compared to 'Professional" grade paint. The difference comes with the intensity or amount (and type) of natural pigments used in making the paint. Some paint pigments are extremely expensive to manufacture, and you generally don't see these in 'Value Economy" or 'Student Grade' paint lines. Sort of understood as a good / better / best situation. Gamblin has their 'Artist Oil' which would be considered their professional grade, and '1980' which works well when you are first starting out learning how to paint with oil, or used as a underpainting.

Gamblin 1980 Oil Colors are solvent free and a good quality brand, if that is what you're asking. I've used them for about 4 months now. I definitely notice a difference between these when compared with other oil paints that are not solvent free. Mainly there is less smell, and they don't bother my allergies as much. But you should still take safety precautions when using these paints, such as good ventilation, etc.
