Early Simenon, so...
I love reading Georges Simenon. That said, this is one of his earlier offerings, written in the 30's, I believe. So it isn't one of the best written books. It gives a wonderfully picturesque peek at the French Riviera during this time period that is just delightful. For that, this is worth the read. But it is written in unfinished sentence speak: "I thought I would, but...", "I swear I can't..." . This gets really annoying. If stuff like that bothers you, and you've never read Georges Simenon, maybe you could start with one of his later offerings. If you are on a mission to grind through each Georges Simenon you can get via your Kindle, like I am, then this is one that will help you go to sleep at night dreaming of Cannes in the 30's, but cursing the characters for never finishing their sentences!

Pne of the best
My family and I are big fans of Maigret. The finely crafted stories which are never really what you expect when you start at page one. The sense of France comes over very strong, the seedier areas rubbing sholders with the great with no sense of shame. The social niceties maintained under all circustances. Liberty Bar is a star in the way it tells the story against a backdrop of hot costal France. You learn as much about the Cote d'Azure as you do about the murder. Maigret at his best.

Maigret almost on holiday
The usual, very sparse text but still a full detective story.I loved the summary that he gives at the end of the book when he is questioned by his wife how his investigation went, all very much concise and to the point, summed up the book very well in just a page.

A love story gone wrong
The pattern of the early Maigret novels continues with Liberty Bar. Simenon dispatches his detective to the Cote d'Azur where he investigates the murder of a local man who, it becomes clear, lived a complex and secret life that finally caught up with him - with fatal consequences. Set in the sunny, glittering world of warmth and wealth, Liberty Bar also reveals a slightly seedier undertone to the place. As usual, Simenon is brilliant at setting the scene and introducing his characters with a lightness of touch and artful brevity that simply doesn't exist in much of today's over-written crime fiction. The plot here is less complex and crammed than some of the Maigret novels from the 1930s - and all the better for it. Once again, that lack of judgement and sensationalism in exploring lives gone off the rails marks the book out as being one more example - in Simenon's own words - of showing a love story gone wrong.
