A thorough look at the chess life of someone relatively unknown in the chess world.

The life and games of a player who is essentially unknown today from an era that is largely unknown. And what a shame that is! However, Mr Davies has gone a long, long way to remedy the situation. The meticulous research brings to life another era, one in which serious games of chess were often played with handicaps and in consultation. Such a thing is unheard of today. Yet was the norm for centuries. That same meticulous research has also brought to life one of the 19th centuries more colorful players in an era filled with colorful players.The book is a marriage, and a successful one, of biography and game collection. One can read of Lipschütz's life and play the games at each stage of his life. This book is a must read for every chessplayer for it shows us how human the noble game truly is.
