Richard Rahl slays the most terrifying straw man he has ever faced, bureaucracy!
This is probably my favourite book in this series. The writing is wonderfully evocative, particularly during the climactic scenes at the end of the plot. In many ways, it feels like it should be the end of Richard and Kahlan's story. The next couple of books do indeed feel like Goodkind had overstepped himself and wasn't sure how to find his way back into the story he wanted to tell. It's really very powerful imagery, that sucked me right into the heart of Altur' Rang and the battle for the Midlands.But.Goodkind isn't just trying to tell a gripping story, he is also trying to convince you of his Ayn Rand like leaning. He is less successful at this than he is at writing an entertaining book. The condemnation of communism is so stark that it feels like a desperate caricature. The praising of libertarianism is so idealistic that his heroes can do no wrong. At times characters give speeches that feel like the author expects you to be a child taking notes as the glorious teacher speaks. There is no room for nuance and this makes the political message much weaker than Goodkind seems to think. I wouldn't want to meet anyone actually convinced by the political themes in this series. There is a lack of introspection and a level of arrogance that feels... well, it feels like libertarianism.I forgive it though. I may not agree with Terry Goodkind's worldview, but I love his world-building.

A very compelling and interesting read.
This title in the series is a bit like Marmite, your either really like it or hate it, personally its one of the better titles in a series that IMO lost some steam after the few initial books. In this book, we see the pair separate with Richard being dragged down to the old world and Kahlan ending up leading the forces. This works amazingly well as rather then the constant, "Richard looks into her green eyes", "Kahlan looks in to his Gray eyes" we see a chance for the pair to grow individually and away from one another. It works well as in this case there are aware of one another and whats happening so unlike other titles, they are not going around in circles trying to save one another. We see Kahlan grow and lead very well and shows how she has a presence, similar to the battle a few books earlier and this is great IMO. Richard on the other hand is down south with a character who has her own agenda is after redemption of sorts. Personally her story is pretty epic in this title and the highlight IMO and going forward one of my Fav characters. There is some weird parts which prevent a full 5 stars, but on the whole, this is definitely one of the better titles in a series that loses focus towards the middle and end books.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this
I don't often write reviews but feel I have to with this series. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading these books and love the characters and the lands they created. Apart from a little bit of repetition of certain points they are a really good read and I could not wait to read the next book in the series each time I finished one

Good book
A little too long maybe but it was enjoyable and it was good to basically have the main characters separated into separate stories!Another good book in the series

kindle sale purchase
Kindle sale purchase.I purchased a load of kindle titles recently and so I cant review the titles themselves yet. My reason for 5 stars is because of the price and the overview sounds great.I will be back later to provide a comprehensive review of this book.

Once it got going, couldn't put it down!
Dreaded reading this after seeing some of the reviews, but glad I did.Not as fasted paced as some of the others but found the pulse racing towards the end!my initial problem was the radical change to the characters of Jagang & Nicci!I found myself wondering if these were the same people that had been in the previous books.Once you can get your mind round that, the book is well worth reading as an addition to this epic!

Good addition
Great addition. Uplifting, in that it shows what the potential for one person actions with an indomitable spirit are. Good book
