Bought the Moccamaster to replace an espresso machine I wasn't using & wanted a machine that would make a large brew of coffee to keep warm so I could replemish a cup throughout the day. Therefore I bought the Moccamaster with the thermal carafe. First the brew. After a bit of refining to get the correct measure of coffee to suit my taste, brewing a full 10 cup batch produced a fantastic cup of coffee. The extraction is very good time & again. The thermal carafe kept the coffee to a good hot temperature for hours with no obvious deterioration in flavour. The only downside, hence the loss of a star is on other models of Moccamaster the filter/coffee basket has an adjustment option to reduce the water flow if you only want to brew half a carafe or just two cups if you were not wanting a full carafe. This model doesn't have that option. I can only think that with only half the water reservoir or less filled with water & a reduction in the amount of coffee grind the machine will still produce a good brew. Unfortunately I've not been able to find any instruction on brewing smaller quantities of coffee using this machine anywhere. Apart from this, overall the Moccamaster is one of the best coffee brewers I've owned, only bettered by the Kona system of perculating coffee. It's not the cheapest on the market as it's hand built in Norway to a high quality, but you do get value from the price payed. These have been manufactured to the same design & been in production since the 1970's & its longevity obviously proves its pedigree.

Terrific looking machine - a definite plus; however we did not notice any improvement in the taste of coffee from some of the cheaper machines we owned previously. The biggest disappointment personally was the amount of cheap-looking and fragile plastic, much of it in direct contact with the hot liquid, especially the long plastic tube that protrudes from the thermal jug lid into the jug as the coffee is being brewed, and then sits in the hot liquid. Despite the BPA-free claims, mixing hot food with plastic makes me uncomfortable as we don't really know what BPA has been replaced with. Pouring the coffee from the jug is strangely messy, as the liquid tends to not come out in a steady stream. The coffee filter basket is very fiddly to put into place. Paying this much, I would expect better performance and quality components frankly, preferably stainless steel.
