This mask can be used for grinding metals?

It can't grind metals on it's own but it can protect your face from flying debris! Sorry Mr. Tobia , I couldn't resist.

Can you wear a respirator under the shield ?

Answering this, as I had the same question, and just tried them. It easily fit the paper 95N type respirator with cool valve. For the other, rubbery mask type with changeable filters, it fit with the round 100P pink cartridges, as they are lower profile. It had maybe half inch to an inch of clearance from cartridge to lens. Since the exhaust shoots down, I hope the lens won't fog up, but we'll see. It did not fit with the organic compound cartridges used for solvents, as those hit the shield before closing halfway. Test was done with shield at lowest setting.

Does it protect the neck? Also does it stay put if flipped up & is that what the ratcheted piece is for)?

It does cover the neck better than any other face shield I've used over the last 15 years and it stays right where you want it. Has a nice thick cushion on the head strap and is also the most comfortable head gear I've worn. It is now my go to face protection over regular safety glasses. Wish I would of bought one sooner. I use it all the time in my shop. Very sturdy.

would this work well with airsofting?

I would say no. It's very large, and not really designed for staying in place while doing lots of physical activity. It's comparable in size and function to a welding helmet.
