King Kurt release on CD, their debut, break-through Stiff Records album 'OOH WALLAH WALLAH' together with a bonus 38-minute DVD. King Kurt first appeared on Thin Sliced Records in 1982 with the 'Zulu Beat' 7 in twenty different vinyl editions. They built up a following at riotous gigs, famously strewn with all sorts of muck thrown around, amongst also offering haircuts and drinking competitions - their mission was to have fun in dour times. Signed to Stiff Records in 1983 they hit the Top 40 with 'Destination Zululand'. The album Ooh Wallah Wallah, was produced by Dave Edmunds and entered the UK top 100. They followed up with Top 50 singles the re-recorded 'Mack The Knife' and 'Banana Banana'. After another album Big Cock on Stiff in 1986, they signed to Polydor for two singles and issued further albums in 1988 and 1994. Musically they created a bizarre mix of roots rock-a-billy, funk, African rhythms and pop, with their own unique craziness and humour. Regular TV shows increased their notoriety as the rat-fixated nutty mohican kids of rock'n'roll. Track list: Zulu Beat, Destination Zululand, Bo Diddley Goes East, Hound Dog, Wreck-A-Party Rock, Ghost Riders In The Sky, Gather Your Limbs, Rockin' Kurt, Lonesome Train, Mack The Knife, Oedipus Rex, Do The Rat. Myself and a friend got heavily into King Kurt when we were about thirteen after seeing Destination Zulu land on Saturday Morning Kids' TV. Both bought Ooh wallah Wallah and Big Cock, T-shirts, the Lot. Got a compilation CD a few years ago, but spotted this on here and had to buy it. The fact that 'She's as Hairy' is on the CD as a bonus track is well, ...a bonus! Love every second of this album, so great to hear it all again, no longer having either a record or a cassette player.

Bought this DVD and CD with no idea what I would be getting, but as anything of this genre (and particularly King Kurt) is not easy to come by in NZ (or is rediculously expensive) I thought I'd give this a go - and I have no regrets! I got my copy from Action records and it arrived fast, well packaged, and the Discs are certainly 'as new'. The main reason I made this purchase was for the DVD which is a real laugh. The only reason I haven't given this 5 stars is because the video/audio quality is quite poor - which is perfectly understandable given the age and probable budget - or lack of. But if you can put the quality aside and just watch the DVD for the content, it's a good laugh and takes you (me) back to the world where music was made for the fun of it and everyone was out for a good natured but raucous time - not too many bands seem to be doing that nowadays. How on earth they conned the Austrians into spending the money to make a 40 minute documentary I have no idea, but I'm glad they did and it's worth watching. If you never made it to a King Kurt gig, this wil make you wish you had. All this for under ten quid, hard to go wrong really.
