The concerts presented here perfectly frame Cheap Trick's rise to fame during the band's classic era. The first comes from Rockford Armory in the band's hometown Rockford, Illinois on October 8th 1977,just a few weeks after the release of their sophomore album 'In Color'. Broadcast live at the time by WYXC, the set list runs through almost all of 'In Color' and most of 'Cheap Trick' including early live versions of all the singles to that point - 'Oh Candy', 'ELO Kiddies', 'I Want You To Want Me' and 'Southern Girls'. The second performance included here took place at Chicago's International Amphitheater on June the 16th, 1979 and is a fascinating document of the band's evolution. Broadcast live by KPFA three months prior to the release of 'Dream Police', the show captures 'Cheap Trick' on the cusp of their breakthrough. Taken together these shows are an essential sonic essay of Cheap Trick during the 1970s and will be both an important part of any fan's collection, as well as a sterling, comprehensive introduction to the first period in the group's history.

Fantastic!
These are two fantastic performances! Love the song "Loser" on the first disc. Never heard it before and absolutely love it! This 4 disc set is worth every penny! Buy it, listen to it, love it!

No ballads
I have 'Disc 1' as a bootleg LP - "Trick or Treat". Sound quality here is a lot better, still benefits from using my 'Omnisonic Imager'[I'm wondering if this is an official product.]The Rockford Armory was about the size of a HS gymnasium. From almost 40 years ago? Darned calendars.

For Hard Core Cheap Trick fans
I'm sure there's people who would get this CD and not like it because its 2 old radio broadcasts. I think thats what gives these Cds their uniqueness. Plus you get hear old rare songs like Please Mrs Henry, Down On The Bay & Loser. These Cds are for hard core Cheap Trick fans like me.

Unfortunate combination
I keep buying these live CDs because the quality of their early songs and the intensity of their performances. The first set is a good show and fun to listen to. The sound is fairly raw, maybe a little tinny, but you can pick out each instrument clearly and feel like you were at the show. The sound of the second set is abysmal. I'm guessing it was recorded off the radio broadcast with a cassette recorder. I still like the first set, but as a complete product this set isn't acceptable unless you're looking for two CDs of music and two coasters.

White hot performance!
Sound quality is only so-so but the performance is white hot. If you care more about moving your hips than sonic perfection, this is a good choice.

Good value
Two live performances recorded by American Radio. The first from 1977 is the better of the two for sound. Having said that there is little seperation in the sound mix so that it does sound a little bombastic. The performance itself is good and shows how great Cheap Trick were (and still are) as a live band before they went stellar with the Budokan live album. Unfortunately the radio announcements in the middle and at the end of the broadcast have not been edited out. The second show, from 1979, suffers from a poorer sound quality. Possibly taken from a recording rather than the original tapes held by the radio station. As a result it is a less satisfying listening experience. The band are still on top form, an updated set list from the 1977 show with some now Cheap Trick classics. All in all, worth the price for a 4CD set with what appears to be two more or less complete shows. Just don't expect a hi-fi listening experience.

Interesting live sets.........decent price.........definitely a bootleg........
Make no mistake about it, this is a bootleg CD. The first 2 discs (Rockford Armory) are of surprisingly good sound quality though! I have a "bootleg" version of that show from the net which I have played regularly. I mean the band were in top shape that night!! They rocked the house like you wouldn't believe! So to hear an even better quality recording was a real pleasure. I would go so far as to say it's a 9 plus out of 10.The last 2 discs (Chicago Ampitheatre) were a bit of a disappointment. To start with the sound quality is general is only about a 6-7/10. I was so let down I have only really listened to disc 3 to be honest. If you are a Cheap Trick fan and want to buy a relatively cheap live set from them, I would recommend this collection. For me, that Armory show is worth the price of admission alone!
