Product Description Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan star in an enchanting romance about a widower whose son convinces him to find new love and the woman who answers his call. desertcart.com The director and stars of 1998's You've Got Mail scoreda breakthrough hit with this hugely popular romantic comedy from 1993, about a recently engaged woman (Meg Ryan) who hears the sad story of a grieving widower (Tom Hanks) on the radio and believes that they're destined to be together. She's single in New York, he lives in Seattle with a young son, but the cross-country attraction proves irresistible, and pretty soon Meg's on a westbound flight. What happens from there is ... well, you must have been living in a cave to have let this sweet-hearted comedy slip below your pop-cultural radar. There's little complexity or depth to writer-director Nora Ephron's cheesy tale of a romantic fait accompli, and more than a little contrivance to the subplots that threaten to keep Hanks and Ryan from actually meeting. But the purity of star chemistry here is hard to deny, and this may be the first film to indicate the more serious and sympathetic side of Hanks that is revealed in later roles. With its clever jokes about "chick movies" and repeated homage to the classic weeper An Affair to Remember, this may not be everybody's brand of amorous entertainment, but it's got an old-Hollywood charm that appeals to many a movie fan. --Jeff Shannon Review: Great movie - ❤️ Review: Sleepless in Seattle continues to delight - I can’t count how many times my wife and I have watched Sleepless in Seattle, but it’s been enough... and when desertcart had a great deal we got it streaming to add to our streaming library. I’ll have to admit - I love everything up to the point Hanks and Ryan get together - I have never been a fan of their chemistry or more to the point, lack there of. But the film is a great ride and has countless charming moments and great acting. This is a story of daring to love again. The relationship between the son and father hinges on them moving on after the death of Hank’s onscreen wife. They were deeply in love and he’s hurting. On the other coast Meg has spent her life doing what’s expecting, being boring, and now she’s getting engaged to the wrong guy - who’s far too much the right guy. (again, I’m a bigger fan of she and that guy staying together, as she and Hanks just do not click - my wife agrees). But beyond that everything is a great ride. The cast is outstanding, the characters interesting and unique, and the story itself is good - a fun RomCom. On the other side, this movie has given us some fun and memorable moments - Rosie and Meg crying over old movies, Hanks’ real life wife, Rita, crying over old movies, Hanks and Gray crying over old movies... and the radio host giving us some of the original “real world drama” on Christmas night - when Meg sings Horses, horses, horses... This is a date night film, a Sunday afternoon, cuddle with your wife, or rainy day way to spend some time enjoying something delightful.

A romantic comedy gem that has stood the test of time
What a pleasure to see this romantic comedy classic restored with crisp imagery and sound. The plot rolls the dice on a hugely unlikely premise, but it does not matter, not only because of the first-rate acting, dialogue, and soundtrack, but because the movie is about deeper things -- holding the self and a family dyad together in the face of devastating and lingering loss, while trying to rebuild; coming to terms with one's own romantic needs, in spite of one's "better" judgment; and above all, being willing to take a risk when fate offers you an unlikely second chance. Meg Ryan, as Annie, was at the peak of her considerable charm and star power here, and Tom Hanks, as Sam, wisely refused to let the film get too sentimental; his arguments with his son Jonah (Ross Malinger) later in the film, and Hanks' now-classic bit with Victor Garber (Greg) losing it over that famed, um, tearjerker, "The Dirty Dozen," provided great comedic balance. Rosie O'Donnell, in the best friend role of "Becky," was never funnier while also being sympathetic -- her facial expressions top even her hilarious line deliveries about "her Rick." Bill Pullman (as Walter, a truly thankless role) has a ridiculously mild reaction to being dumped by Annie, but this was a classic Nora Ephron move; she had an interesting weakness for unrealistic soft landings (see also Meg Ryan-Greg Kinnear in "You've Got Mail"; Pullman was given a much richer character in "While You Were Sleeping," with Sandra Bullock). You don't ultimately mind, though, because by that point in the film you so want Annie to find Jonah and Sam on the top of the ESB. And when Sam and Annie finally hold hands -- "Magic." That is the genius of Sleepless in Seattle.

Okay romance.
I'd heard lots and lots about this movie over the years since it was released, so I finally broke down and rented a stream off of Amazon just to see what all the fuss was about. I'm like that. When something popular hits the mainstream, I tend to shy away from it unless I was there to see it debut. It's who I am. It's a light drama with one or two comedic moments, but nothing overly heavy. It's more or less a romantic fantasy that somewhat skews female, though dudes with heart should probably enjoy it too. Though my comments come many days late and many dollars short in terms of timeliness. Like a lot of Amazon streams the image, even though it's high definition, is still marginally soft around the edges. And this review comes from a guy living in the Bay Area, THE tech hub for the world, and has the fastest possible home net connection that you can have. So, take that for what it's worth. It is a movie, so the story elements and premise, to me, as a fantasy, can't be taken any way other than as a fantasy. To me these films are kind of basic. My background is shooting corporate video and indy features, so when I see a film like this that has that major studio gloss to it, I often wonder what it would have been like with no-marquis actors and an independent budget, but with the same shooting schedule and styles (minus all the grip gear that goes along with a major Hollywood production). It's just the way I think. Check it out, if you haven't already. It's not the huge sleeper that I think it was billed as being when it was in the theatres all those years ago, but it's worth a gander.
