How waterproof is this thing? If it suddenly started torrential rain would you be dry inside? Also, is the top sec ion and the bottom section connected, for instance is there a gap or is it one piece? can bugs crawl in the seam if there is one?

John, just like any other piece of camping gear, you must have the knowledge to use it correctly to your maximum benefit. It amazes me that some people bash this little tent because they don't know how to actually use it. Let me answer your questions from the perspective of a former Boy Scout and still an avid camper/hiker. THIS IS A BACKPACKING TENT meaning, you are lugging all your gear (clothes, food, water, shelter) with you for a weekend of hiking, quite possibly miles away from where you parked your car. So how waterproof is it? - By itself, not very. Its enough to keep you dry from the morning dew and light "misty" wet conditions. Outside of that, like others have pointed out, in a torrential down pour you will be soaked to the bone. BUT!!! Ahhhh but....that is only if you use this tent by itself. Instead of letting the tent go solo, stringing up a heavy duty tarp over it will keep you dry in a light to moderate rain. Think of running a piece of rope taught from two trees then drape the center of the tarp over the rope lengthwise (like a towel on a shower towel rack). Then stake down each corner of the tarp to basically form a "tarp tent" over this smaller pup tent. Sure, you'd have to lug around a separate tarp to keep dry, but it sure beats lugging around a tent that A) weighs too much B) won't do a better job than this tent with a tarp/rain fly.Now the "Torrential rain"? Well, what tent will keep you completely dry in a monsoon? (seriously, if you know of one please, let me know!).Yes, this is all one piece. Mine is the tent fabric material from the sides up to the peak, while the "floor" and a few inches up from there is tarp material.So, to sum it up, if you are looking to buy this for your next backpacking/wilderness camping adventure, you can't go wrong with this guy and a decent size tarp to keep the rain off it. (I think the tarp I have is a 12'x12'. Anything around 10'x10' should work well) However, if you are looking to buy this for one of your kids for the next family "park n' camp" trips, buy something bigger that the kids will enjoy more.

Yes, but it is just as cheap as the tent. You won't be carrying it in the bag for very long before it breaks.

is this a good back packing tent and does it stay dry when it rains

I feel that this is a great backpacking/stealth camping tent. The tent is water resistant, but not water proof. Most rain will just run down the side of the tent to the ground, but if there is any areas where it can pool, then that will seep in. It is best to use this with a tarp or under a good tree. The bugscreen entrance is great for star gazing, and the walls are shear enough that you can see things approaching from all around you in the moonlight. If you are over 6'4" i'd recommend the one from Texsport, its 6 inches longer and is both camo and more waterproof, but not as resilient as this one.

dose it easy fit in the bag?

this should easily fit in most bags. in its carry bag its about 14 inches long, and 4 inches in diameter. if you ditched the poles and just made your own on site then you could probably get down even smaller. I have it rolled up with my sleeping mat and attached to my bag underneath, but I have also packed it in the bag and had plenty of room. I have a Fox Advanced Mountaineering Pack though and those are about 80 liter bags, so pretty large.
