Fresh (and zero-waste) coffee at 36000 feet
Working as a flight attendant, I operate on countless cups of coffee that keep me awake and energized. This little device helps me brew myself a cuppa wherever I am - on a plane or in a hotel room. Great alternative to single-use paper filters.

We bought two Brew Buddy single serve mesh filters to try out before considering them as gifts for the coffee drinkers in our life. After using them we have some thoughts: Overall we like them, a lot! These little gems have worked like a dream! The grinds dump right out of them cleanly; there are a few grinds left, but let's be honest, that is the nature of the beast! The Brew Buddy sclean right up with some hot water and detergent. There are no open seams for grinds to get caught in and the dark color of the mesh keeps it from getting that dingy look white mesh tends to get from repeated exposure to coffee. We have not used a lot of flavored coffee in the Brew Buddy, we just don't roll that way, but the mesh hasn't held a coffee aroma at all. We have tried other pour over style coffee setups and they have been decent. But, some of them have (or should I say, had) white mesh and it has taken on a rather stained appearance over time. And some are hard to use with a mega-sized mug. Or they involve a "hard" filter, or a carafe of some sort, or both. All of which can make traveling with them a bit daunting or just not possible. (You know the result of that, right? You're stuck with either a really pricey coffee of whatever passes for coffee where you are, neither of which is ideal!) The way the plastic on the Brew Buddy (AKA little mesh basket of caffeine handiness) is shaped keeps steam dripping back into the cup and not rising out of the sides of the filter to prematurely cool your brew. That is so nice, because, you know, some days you just don't get to brew and consume. Some days life intervenes. With the Brew Buddy you can buy a few more minutes of nice hot coffee without a reheat (it's never as good that way) or suffering the lukewarm coffee experience. The Brew Buddy also stores pretty flat so it's easy to transport. I would suggest a plastic zip top bag to carry it in. You can count on a great coffee experience pretty much anywhere with these. Just pack some of your favorite ground bean or tea (it works marvelously for loose tea, too!!!) in a travel container, along with the Brew Buddy and you're all set to meet adventure with properly caffeinated confidence! The diameter of the Brew Buddy allows it to be used on just about any diameter mug, you would have to have and extraordinarily wide mug for these not to work for you. It's perfect for just about any size mug, short, tall, wide or narrow. Your coffee pleasure shouldn't be limited by the mug you're handed, no matter where you're imbibing! I think the coffee drinkers on our gift list will be finding one of these in their presents!

This is one of the best things I've ever bought on amazon.ca. I initially bought this to quickly steep green tea for my husband instead of using a tea ball but I quickly found out (after giving away my bonmac coffee dripper to someone else who loved it) that this is great for brewing coffee grounds, too. If a traditional pour-over produces a 5/5 flavoured cup of coffee, this Buddy (at less cost, effort and waste) will give you a 4/5 cup. It will not filter out some of the sediment and oils that a dripper system with a filter does. But your coffee still tastes great and in lickety split time. Just measure in your grounds and pour water. That's it. Almost as fast a making a cup of (shudder) instant. This quick method also means that your coffee is hotter than with a traditional pour-over set up (which you have to drink almost as soon as you make or it goes cold). As a busy mom, I really appreciate how fast I can get a good cup of coffee in the morning when I need one, without any extra fuss, expense and waste. My husband and I use this on mornings when we want coffee but not a whole pot. I'm surprised at how sturdy and strong the filter fabric portion of this Buddy is. It is holding up to regular use (several times a week, sometimes daily, for over a year now) and hand washing (we air dry in our dish drainer). Another reviewer mentioned letting the wet coffee grounds dry out over another cup to make emptying the dried out grounds into the bin easy, so we often do that. This would be super for making a decent cup of coffee at the office. We also use it for green tea and don't notice any transfer of coffee flavour so, to me, it means the Buddy washes cleanly. If time is against you often or you wake up tired or don't want to spend a lot on fancy dripper systems or coffee machines, I would definitely recommend getting this. It's simple and it works. The bonus is that it is inexpensive. Before motherhood, I would have turned up my nose at using something like this (it's plastic, the horror) but life changes. Now, I wouldn't necessarily use this to brew expensive gourmet coffee: I would at least put a paper filter in first. Or buy another bonmac dripper for that :-) And a goose-neck kettle. In the meatime, this is perfect with normal, store-bought grounds or beans and for tea people, it should be fine for loose-leaf brewing.

I've been using these for 2 years. They're absolutely PERFECT for travelling because of how flat they pack. They fit every cup I've tried them in and no filters to fuss with. They clean up super easy and I like the control over the strength of brew. I've started giving them to friends for their trips. Highly recommend!
