Read this a long time ago and just re-purchased to re-read. Love her stuff.

At first I couldn't get into the story. But ...
At first I couldn't get into the story. But after about 30 pages I was hooked and stayed up all night. An intensely moving story of two totally different womens' reaction to/handling of massive personal and familial traumas.

A great story with unforgettable characters
An excellent read, as expected. I always enjoy Louise Erdrich's books. Her characterizations are excellent and written with great compassion.

Its one of her early novels. If you are just discovering her work, this is a good place to start, or with Love Medicine.
Old favorite, just needed a new copy.

Erdrich is a true storyteller with incredible characters and fascinating plot development.
There are other books by Louise Erdrich that I have enjoyed more, but she does not disappoint with THE BEET QUEEN. Definitely a good read!

Fascinating Characters!
This is very much a character driven novel and the author brought most of the main characters together in the end in an attempt to resolve the various story lines, but it did not quite work for me. However, her use of language to describe the characters and their environment is always fresh.

Wonderful characters
Well written, rich, strong narrative. Louise Erdrich has a fluid, sharp style of writing, sprinkled with wit and intelligence. She is a marvelous story teller. Endearing and quirky characters. Erdrich beautifully and vividly depicts the intertwined lives of a family and their close friends in a small town in North Dakota. The story spans fifty some-odd years. I enjoyed the book, but I have to admit that I did not get hooked into the story. After awhile I was anxious to get to the end. However, after having read the reviews for The Plague of Doves, I definitely want to read it.
