You won't believe how much is packed into this book!
I am using this book with one of my student groups which had previously completed an A1/A2 English refresher course and were ready for the next challenge. I have previously used a higher level 3rd edition of English File over a number of semesters with another class, so I know that the A2/B1 level intermediate English File will provide the group with plenty of material for several semesters. The 4th edition is definitely worth buying; the quality of the printed material is excellent, and despite at first appearing to be quite a thin volume, it is packed with material. The aim is to get you talking, but that doesn't mean that reading, writing and listening are neglected. If you use the book in a class, you can focus on the speaking there and bolster your overall linguistic knowledge at home with extra reading, grammar exercises and listening tasks to accustom you to listen for - and reproduce - the subtle differences in pronunciation which you just don't get in most course books. The online materials are great, with a good overview page from which you can navigate to related exercises, the audio and video materials referenced in the book, and transcripts of the same. Keep in mind that you have two years' online access via an access code in the course book, but you can download the audio and video materials and transcripts. Alternatively, stream direct from the web site. You can also save your progress through the online exercises. If you look around the OUP website, you'll find plenty of additional material as well, including an extra collection of short texts with accompanying exercises for each level. As OUP text books of course come from the UK, check that the price is realistic. You can buy direct from OUP, but Amazon usually has reasonably priced copies on hand. Some resellers have inflated the price significantly. English File is by far my favourite course at this level, and I have worked with loads!
