what is the capacity?

Measurements are 21×13×7.5 I believe. On a backpacking trip I managed to fit a fanny pack, 2 sweaters, a flannel shirt, a small toiletry bag, a raincoat, a towel, and about 7 days' worth of the shirts/bottoms/underwear. It was a VERY tight squeeze but the bag can hold a lot if you roll your stuff small and cram it in there! I wrapped the shoulder strap around it to take some pressure off the zipper too.

Can i fit 4 large books?

Yes you can. However a caution - I have a 15.6 inch laptop that I have to wrestle into the padded pocket.

Can you unzip the large compartment from the top or from the side only? And.....if from the side only, does the flap open completely?

Only from the side. The flap opens perfectly well.
