This was a very nice and complete package.
This was a very nice and complete package. Everything you needed was included with this kit even the esata cable. It is a super easy set up and I had no issues with this drive. So far the drive is working perfect. The drive is quite and was much smaller in overall size than I thought looking at pictures. The drive does not appear to have any lag and is playing back video perfectly. The drive case does have a bright blue light on it but i just set the drive on the floor behind a dresser and its not an issue at night. If it is a small piece of black tape solves that problem if it would bother you. I Highly recommend this DRVdaddy drive. Remember when you connect an external drive to your DVR you loose the on board storage while its connected so order a larger drive to compensate for the loss. I am using this external drive with a Directv Genie HR 54 box.

A Must for Directv subscribers
Works flawlessly. Easy to set up, less than 5 minutes. Very quiet, don't even know it is there. Amazing amount of storage. Well worth the $$. Wish I would have had this when I had my previous receiver. I can now stop deleting my wife's recordings

Lacking in customer support and warranty
Initially it was a wonderful thing that worked really well. I loved having so many movies and shows stored on my external DVR and only using a small fraction of the hard drive space. Sadly, in 3 months time I began experiencing problems with the DVR hard drive. My shows would freeze up or stop completely 5 minutes into a show. I noticed that their's no phone number on their website so I went ahead and sent an email. While I heard back a few days later, I shared my situation with the person and have heard absolutely nothing since then. It appears at the moment that their's no effort to stand behind the product with their 2 year warranty. I'd love to report back a different story to you all, but sadly this is where it stands. Be careful if customer service and a product warranty are important to you. Update: 2-7-18 I've sent the owner an email a week, and he's refused to respond. No phone number on the website can be found to call, so basically i'm screwed. Think twice people... this guy does not stand behind his 2 year warranty in the least!

This DVR allows us to save more shows that we love. It is easy to connect and use and arrived as promised. One thing to note is that the shows existing on the Direct TV DVR are not accessible without disconnecting the drive. One thing that will come in handy will be the ability to connect another drive when this one fills up. This will allow us to keep the shows we love and not have to worry about running out of room on the dvd. The only downside to using more than one DVR is keeping track of what shows are on what DVR as only one can be connected at a time.

Great capacity, but a little noisy.
The capacity of this disk is excellent and installation was a breeze. The only issue is that is makes a lot of noise, it appears to be seeking all the time and the head is moving on the disk. You need to put it in a more sound proof area.

This drive arrived in nice packaging and its construction inspires confidence in its quality
This drive arrived in nice packaging and its construction inspires confidence in its quality. It comes with a key that releases a lock on the front of the enclosure, allowing you to swap HDDs if necessary. I'm not sure how this would affect the warranty though. Our DVR recognized the drive right away and it's been working flawlessly over the past week that we've had it installed. The only drawbacks to this drive relate to pre-existing recordings and management. You will lose access to all of your existing recordings on your internal DVR drive (as others have already mentioned) and you will also lose all of your set recordings. While the instructions state that all recording management will be left intact, this wasn't the case for us. We have been slowly re-adding our recordings as we remember them... it may take a while to get all 80+ reset. I'm not taking a star off for this as this may be the case when installing any external HDD, so that's not DVRdaddy's fault. Excellent product!

Works great so far, holds a lot of shows
We got tired of running out of space on the DirecTV DVR's. Plus we found if you let the DVR's hard drive get over 80% full, the system really slows down. After years of thinking of getting one of the DVRdaddy External DVR Hard Drive Expanders, I finally decided give it a try before the new TV season (does that matter anymore?) started. So far, since August 2018, we have been very happy with it. Had to set it up with all the shows we watch as that doesn't transfer over, but I knew that from emailing the company and reading reviews and the description. So I knew what I was getting into. Also, you CANNOT watch shows from the old DVR that you plug this expander in unless you turn off the DVR, unplug the cable and plug the DVR back in and reboot. Takes 5-10 minutes to reboot. Once again, it was no issue as I did my homework and knew this to be the case. So I am slowly getting the old shows off the old DVR and re-recording some movies we had on the other one. So I was aware of what we could and couldn't do and am very happy with the new DVRdaddy, After three months of recordings and watching some as we go, we are at 10% full and it works great and is nice a quiet.
