A View From The Top Of The World

Mangini's Album
Mangini's drumming both propels and is interwoven with the rest of the instruments to a degree that dominates but does not overwhelm--masterfully. He does so much besides provide the timing. His drumming is like a complementary counter-voice to LaBrie's. Their best album to date (I'd rate "The Astonishing" as #2).

Excellent Cd
I just finished listening to this CD. It is the best CD I've listened to since Awake which I consider there best CD. I have a newfound respect for Mike Mangini. He does some excellent drumming on this CD. I do think they are a better band with Mike Portnoy. Welcome back Mike. The band is back together.

DT is back!!
I am a longtime fan of the band, having been hooked with Images and Words back in 1992. I have gotten every album since, even getting first DT (pre-Labrie) album from 1989 and the Majesty demos. As it is with any band, I have my favorite albums (Images and Words, Scenes from a Memory and the self-titled Dream Theater, quickly come to mind) and songs. I also have albums and songs that I like less so or felt a bit disappointed in. The Astonishing was one that I won’t put as one of my favorites, but it was ambitious and had its moments. Distance Over Time was a return to form and overall a pretty good album.A View seems to be more of a continuation of DOT with its hard-rocking sound that DT is known. In some ways, it feels like the second side of that album. Like that album, this album is just over an hour with 7 songs, ending with the epic opus title track at 20 minutes. This album seems a bit less cohesive and a bit more abstract than previous albums. The album didn’t grab me like other DT albums, but sometimes DT albums need more than a few listens to appreciate. I personally like DT when they do a ballad or two as some of my favorite songs from albums past are ballads or ballad-like, such as Surrounded, Wither, Best of Times, Hollow Years, Silent Man and Take Away My Pain. In this case, there really isn’t anything like that here. There are mostly strong aggressive progressive rock songs here. I personally like Answering the Call, Awaken the Master, A View from the Top Of the World, and Transcending Time, the best. The other songs were ok, but again, the album hasn’t grabbed me like other albums have.Lyrically, the songs aren’t are good as some of my favorite albums, but the music is as strong and powerful as ever.A band that is around 30 years old with 15 albums, you can’t always make an Images and Words album every time, but I am happy the band can continue to put out some good stuff and sound as good as they always have.Overall, this is a decent album. Not in my top 5 list of DT albums, but with such a large catalog of good music, it is hard for them to top some of their best stuff, but this is a pretty good album overall that most DT fans should enjoy.3.5 to 4 stars

Progressive Rock/Metal at it's finest!
I'm a musician and a lover of this type of music. If you love blazing fast and melodic solos on guitar & keyboard along with superior drums, bass, and vocals, you will love this CD. They somehow manage to incorporate catchy melodies into insane time signatures and super fast riffs. There's some slow and mid tempo sections as well that are just as good. These guys have been around a long time, but this CD sounds as wild and kicking as their early work. I highly recommend it!

Second best Dream Theater album of all time!!
Ever since Mike Mangini joined the band, DT is the new Rush. And I don't say that lightly as a fan of Rush for 30 years. This album is amazing. I have no idea how they keep coming up with such cool grooves in odd time signatures. And to give credit where it's due...somehow James LaBrie comes up with memorable, singable vocal melodies that work over the most complicated stuff. This is THE prog rock band of all time!

One of their best albums
Dream Theater did not waste their time during the pandemic. This album has some of the strongest songs they've written in a while. The drum sound is the best since Mike Mangini joined the band. One other thing I've noticed is that in addition to the prog masterpieces, some of the songs have a real groove to them. Every member of the band shines. Must buy for any Dream Theater fan.
