Twin ESS DACs for studio quality sound Whereas the already impressive XDP100R has one ESS DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) the XDP300R has two. Using two DACs means the left and the right channels each get dedicated conversion processes. What this means for sound is enhanced detail and a more immersive soundstage with precise focus between the left and right channels.

Exceeded my expectations
Audio QualityHaving recently acquired a Cowon Plenue D that had better than expected audio quality, I wasn't expecting this Pioneer XDP-300R to be a whole lot better in that regard. With most earbuds and common headphones this was the case. However, when I pulled out some of the Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser headphones I use for more serious listening, I found this player gave a superior listening experience, generally broadening the soundstage presented by the headphones. The difference was more apparent with higher quality FLAC and lossless formats, but could even be heard in 320kbps MP3 files of orchestrated content.User interface and featuresWith the Cowon Plenue D, I found the UI lacking. It worked and had all the requisite features to provide a good listening experiences plus a few extras like sound profiles that I applied to improve the listening experience with earbuds. However, navigation wasn't exactly smooth or particularly intuitive. Given the price, I was expecting more from this Digital Audio Player (DAP). Thankfully, my expectations were met in this regard. Navigation is smooth, relatively intuitive, and allows me to apply custom mixer settings on a per song basis. Setting up playlists and general organization is also far superior to the Cowon Plenue D.Bottom lineIf you are capable of hearing the difference between MP3 and lossless formats AND have a good pair of headphones or speaker system, then this Pioneer DAP's audio quality can be appreciated. If smooth and intuitive UI is a primary concern, particularly if you like to tweak a lot, the Pioneer DAP's UI can be appreciated. If both are true, then this DAP justifies its cost. If only one is true, then I'd weigh its merits against cheaper players like the Cowon Plenue D, but depending on the prices at the time, Pioneer may still win out. If neither of these statements are fully true, then the Cowon Plenue D is a fine player at a more reasonable price than may still be more player than you need.Note: I have purchased the international version as I found it much cheaper. I works just fine in English and only lacks the EU mandated volume limiter required on EU versions of DAPs from all companies intending to sell directly to EU citizens.

Good entry level DAC, with caveats
While this is a terrific player there are some annoying downsides. For one, you can't import playlists. For another, the software Pioneer gives you to import music to the player is absolutely useless. Doesn't work at all. Luckily, I use MediaMonkey as my computer player, and it allows you to load up the music you want right from the program. On the plus side, with two slots for micro chips it has tons of room, which you'll need for your hi-res audio files such as FLAC and ALAC. it also runs Android over wi-fi, so you can download apps, send & receive email, etc. But best not keep it on when you're listening to music as it adversely affects sound quality.

Excellent Player, Excellent Sound & Good Price For What You Get!...Just 1 Con.
The media could not be loaded. My first video review ever! Did my best to cover what I could remember I wanted to cover in the video. If you have questions about something that I didn't show/cover in the video, ask in the comments and I'll try to answer it! (Oh, and sorry about all the "Umms" and "Uhhs" in there! I'll have to watch that next time!)

JACK OF ALL TRADES DAP !
great sounding DAP. clear details. expansive soundstage, supports DSD and MQA, array of connections and great deal of portability. and the power of android in your DAP means you can stream hi res content on tidal etc and works flawlessly offline too. i wish it could have operated as an external DAC to my PC/laptop.so sad the case and screen protector were not included. and the case was tad expensive too. ={

Sound is great, but I don't recommend.
I'd like to start by saying the device actually sounds amazing with my Campfire audio Orion's ...when it actually powers on and functions properly. I had issues right out of the box with constant reboots, boot loops, and just not powering up. There are no forums discussing these issues so I can only assume I got a defective unit. My return is in process.

Internation version works better than the US version.
I purchased the US Version. Had a ton of issue with connectivity. Mainly Wifi. Couldn't figure it out. Everything I own is new. Cars, Hifi Gear, etc.. This international version...OMG... why does it work better than the US version? This is less expensive and it's solid. WOW. I mean WOW. Great unit. Everything I had hopped it could be and plenty more. Hope it Rocks for years to come.
