Welcome to Foss
A new Doctor Who talking book. This tells an all new story for the Eleventh Doctor and Clara, which hasn't appeared in any other medium before. It follows the usual format for these. In that it runs for seventy minutes. It's basically one long episode, with the only breaks being the usual cd chapter ones. The sleeve notes just give copyright info and advertise other bbc audio product. Also as usual, the one single reader does all the narration, and all the voices. The reader in this case is Jacob Dudnam, a young actor who has been getting a good reputation for his work in this field, and who has done other Doctor Who audio work, and who does incredibly good takes on the Tenth Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors. If you've not heard him before you'll be for a treat, as you really could be forgiven for thinking that it was Matt Smith speaking. He does a very good range of original supporting voices as well. His take on Clara takes a little bit of getting used to. But you will. The story sees the TARDIS visit a planet called Foss. A world of dense and intricate features and plant life on the surface. Where there are two life forms. The insect like Fossians and the spider like Drak Arzin. Neither trusts the other in the slightest, and the time travellers and one friendly Fossian are caught up in the conflict between them. But when they find the secret of the planet, it turns into a race against time to get the two species to work together...There's a lot to like here. In addition to listening to the Doctor. The world building is excellent, making it a wholly convincing alien planet. And as with the best of this range, it has enough good developments in the story at the right points to keep it moving along very nicely and hold your interest. It is the first of these that stops it from feeling familiar and really grabs the interest.Whilst ultimately it doesn't do anything desperately unconventional, it is the little details as mentioned above that do hold you all the way to the end. This is a slightly above average entry in this range, and it is well worth a listen.

Lost In Paradise?
Doctor Who: Paradise Lost.BBC Audio.Running Time: 72 Minutes.Narrated By Jacob Dudman.Synopsis.On the edge of a nebula, the TARDIS lands on the strange planet of Foss, which is covered in dense & intricate minerals & vegetation. The spindly, insect-like Fossians are suspicious of the Doctor & Clara, believing them to be on the side of the large, spider-like Drak-Arzin. But when the travellers meet the Drak-Arzin they discover that Foss is far more than a planet: it is, in fact, a giant life-form, nearing the end of its life-span. But what secret lies at the the heart of the Fossians’ mine? With the help of a young Fossian named Anura, the Doctor & Clara try to intermediate between Foss and its two warring people.Timelord Thoughts.Jacob Dudman is a rare gem & fantastic reader of Paradise Lost a brand new adventure for the Eleventh Doctor, Dudman imitation of the Eleventh Doctor is so eerily accurate to the point I actually believed his name was a misprint & that it was Matt Smith who's narrating this audiobook that is how believable Dudman is playing the role, what's also great is that he brings the other characters to life so magnificently by giving each character a voice that this kinda feels like a full cast audio drama at times with Dudman just narrating the story.Writer Darren Jones sticks to a well worn formula of a planet (a unknown lifeform called Foss) which is on the verge of exhausting its natural resources while the inhabitants - two factions wage a on-going war against each other while the Doctor & Clara try to intervene & bring about a truce before the planets destruction. The shows done this type of story arc before but writer Jones creates a engaging story as well as interesting characters & adds vaild points to each factions point of view while playing to the Eleventh Doctors strengths in brokering a truce between the insect like Fossians & spider like Drak Arzin which is similar in tone to the Silurian 2 parter from Series 5, but when the Doctor's discovery of the planets secret it turns into a tense race against time to get the two warring species to work together or face extinction themselves which adds some great moments of tension as well as some excellent character drama thrown into the mix.The story is paced well over 70 minutes & never feels padded out or overstaying it's welcome & builds towards a strong climax, the sound design features some incidental music & occasional sound effects which aren't as polished as Big Finish Productions does help create atmosphere during the stories important moments.Overall, if you enjoy the Eleventh Doctor era then this is a excellent addition to the BBC Audiobook range, with a strong plot, interesting characters & the superb talents of narrator Jacob Dudman this is definitely one adventure that's worth a listen.
