Is it dishwasher safe??

I have had my plate set for a while now, at least 6 years or so. I put them in the dishwasher all the time and have not seen a difference in the quality of the art. They have a few chips by now because of banging around during a few moves but I'm still very happy with them. Of course, I put a lot of stuff in the dishwasher that isn't supposed to go in, but for example, my Tervis tumblers die pretty quick from the dishwasher but these plates are still in great shape.

What is the material of the plates?

Appears to be ceramic but isn't specified. There is a Japanese symbol on the underside of the plates.
