Absolute Wonder Woman 1

A lovely collector's edition for one of the best New 52 storylines.
With the New 52, DC rebooted their iconic heroes with revised backstories and a new continuity and many controversial changes to both designs and the overall canon. Brian Azzarello who has written such works as 100 Bullets, Joker and Flashpoint: Batman, has given us a lovely reimagining of Wonder Woman. The changes here may upset those who are familiar with Diana of Themyscira, but on their own, Azzarello has weaved a complex story that is true to the spirit of Greek mythology and despite a darker tone, the wonder, grace and wisdom of the character. This large hardcover Absolute edition collects the first half of the story, issues #1-18 plus the prequel #0 issue. The storyline is entirely self contained, with a definite beginning and end (once Vol 2 is out) and it has no real connections to the rest of the New 52. So if this is your first Wonder Woman book, your first DC New 52 book, or first comic book in general, you should have no problem following the story beyond knowing basic Wonder Woman info. This story follows Wonder Woman on a journey to find Zeus after he has disappeared from Mount Olympus, while also discovering a shocking secret about herself. She ends up meeting several members from the Greek pantheon and her adventure is full of drama, comedy and action. Though the world we are introduced to is quite dark, Wonder Woman is as heroic as ever, showing kindness and understanding alongside her strength and ferocity. The artwork by Cliff Chiang (with Goran Sudzuka substituting on some issues) is some of the most gorgeous I've seen in any comic. It is full of color and amazing designs for all the characters. The Greek gods look nothing like they did in previous Wonder Woman comics but each design is incredibly creative and very fitting for the modern day setting.I highly recommend this book, not just to Wonder Woman fans, but to anyone who likes comics or wants to get into them.Note: There's a fair amount of sex (not explicitly shown but it's mentioned as a plot point) and violence throughout, so this is better for teens 13+. If you are looking for a Wonder Woman book that is better for children, I would check out The Legend of Wonder Woman by Renae de Liz.

A Wonderful Volume!
"Absolute Wonder Woman by Brian Azzarello & Cliff Chiang Vol. 1" collects the first eighteen issues and the zeroth issue of the New 52 "Wonder Woman" comics, in which Diana learns of her true parentage and enters a conflict between the forces of Olympus and the illegitimate offspring of Zeus for control over heaven's throne. Azzarello's writing encapsulates the dark, gritty feel of the New 52 universe and, while his Wonder Woman is often more reactionary, the fast-paced story and action are entertaining. His exploration of the various realms of the gods recalls the world-building in Neil Gaiman's work. That world-building would not be possible without Chiang's artwork. His take on the gods, while different from the more classically Greek appearance in George Pérez's work, fits the tone of Azzarello's writing and adds a level of the fantastic that a more traditional approach might not. Long-time fans of the character may wish for more, but this is a good introduction to the New 52 version and the gorgeous hardcover slipcase volume will look perfect on bookshelves. The concept sketches and other background material are a wonderful addition to this work.

story arc from the new 52 is one of my favorite comics period
The six vol. story arc from the new 52 is one of my favorite comics period. To say I was thrilled to see this was coming out, is a bit of an understatement. It collects the first three vols. and is considered the first vol. in this absolute set. It is absolutely beautiful. This story definitely deserved to be adapted in this high quality format. Worth every penny. I can't wait for the 2nd volume. I sincerely hope DC puts the rest of it out soon. Highly recommend this book

DC: Stop with the fill-in artists
If Cliff Chiang had illustrated this entire book, buying it would be a no-brainer. But because of DC's editorial policy of demanding a monthly schedule during the book's original periodical release, that means that almost half of this book is illustrated by fill-in artists. And for me, reading this book in its collected edition, that would be like watching a movie in which the entire cast was switched out every 20 minutes for an entirely new cast. It's awkward, it's distracting, and it was completely avoidable if DC editorial had simply allowed this series to be published on a schedule which Cliff Chiang could accommodate. So, in their short-sightedness, DC has lost what would have been a guaranteed customer for this book. It's their characters, their property, and they can (mis)manage their business as they choose. But the consequences of that mismanagement is lost sales from people like me who were otherwise predisposed to give them my money. Their loss.

one of the best Wonder woman storie
If you collect Absolute editions you would know how great the quality these are, having the beautiful art in and over size format is great. Ciff Chiang art in this is simply wonderful. Most of the stories coming out of the new 52 were terrible, this was one of the rare stories which was brilliant. It made Wonder Woman from a hero to something truly mystical. Must read for Wonder Woman beginners or fans.
