OWC Mercury Pro 24X Super-Multi 24X DVD/CD Burner/Reader External Optical Drive with M-DISC Support

This thing is built like a tank. So far I haven't found a disc it coudn't read or write, although I haven't recorded anything in Blu Ray. And I don't think it will play SACD or DVD-A discs either, but I don't need it for that. Connect this to any computer with a USB 3.0 cable and there's nothing you can't do. I generally just use Audacity for music files, but whatever you're comfortable with is good. This is NOT designed to be a portable device; it's AC powered, but it is compact enough to cart around in a nice case, although somewhat heavy. Comes with a USB A-male to B-male cable or you can use your own. On/off switch is on the back. Drawer open/close play buttons on the front. Very solid, very stable drive. Not plastic, all metal and heavy. Should last a lifetime. This is a drive, not a player, so you do need a computer as a controller.

I use this to rip CDs into FLAC files for my personal consumption and let me say this thing is FANTASTIC! I don't know when CD players got really expensive, but the cheap 20 dollars ones are really slow. Meanwhile, this monster of a player was ripping them at 33x speeds; I was ripping whole CDs in a matter of minutes whereas on my LG player I was getting at best 1 hour times. The motor that opens the tray is strong too, nothing like the flimsy ones you get on modern externals or the really old trays from the 00s. I haven't tried BluRay yet but that's next!

My unit arrived without the wall AC plug adapter that snaps into the main power adapter, there are different types to conform with the country it is being used in but the main AC power block is the same. Without that small piece there is no way to plug it in. I would have had to ship it back for a replacement but chose to order the correct part directly from OWC. This seems to be an ongoing issue when buying on Amazon. Several times the products arrive without a critical part or has some internal defect. I am starting to wonder if these "new" products are really return stock or seconds and being sold as new.

I ordered this to replace my half-size, built-in, second-rate player. Unlike those flimsy gadgets, this unit is strong, sturdy and a pleasure to use. I highly recommend it without question.

Worked great for a couple weeks. Then stopped working. I went through the whole rigamarole of sending it in for repair, got it back, it worked again for a couple months. Then died again. Junk. Do not buy.

What an amazing reader/writer. It is blindingly fast, totally sturdy, and made by OWC -- a fantastic company. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS -- TOTALLY WORTH THE INVESTMENT!!

I've only had the drive about three weeks or so. So far, I am very pleased. This drive is FAST! It is capable of writing to DVDs at a rate that exceeds the capabilities of the disc, so I have to throttle back the write speed through the burning software. I wanted to use the drive for a while before I wrote a review. So far, very good. I hope my experience continues at the same level! And I hope the drive is sturdy enough to be used on a regular basis for a long time.

Das DVD-Laufwerk fügt sich problemlos in ein UBUNTU22 ein und fällt dadurch auf, daß es unauffällig aber zuverlässig seine Pflicht tut!

Expensive, but good quality, this drive feels really solid and has performed impeccably to date.

My main concern was that the Drive will not be recognized by the operating system and hardware or that the content of my CDs or DVDs will not be readable for some reason. I am happy to report that there we no issues with connectivity / compatibility and no issues with reading various archive files (1997+). I am happy with the purchase.

I wanted a fast, reliable solid state external optical drive - none of that flimsy slim thin nonsense. So far fast is what I have got with this. The reliability is yet to be proven long term as I’ve only had it 2 days. Nevertheless it worked straight out of the box with my Windows 10 Pro laptop and I don’t see why that would not continue to be the case. To echo others… it looks and feels solid and well built - worth every penny.
