Is it possible the hook does NOT attach to criss-crossing designed side as shown, but on the other plain side??

The most important thing is the air flow direction. The air flow is intended to keep the Air Freshener in place. If your filter has only one crisscrossed side then it can be placed on the other side as long as it is on the side that the air is moving against.

You place it on the side of your air filter where air passes by. There’s a hook to hook it to the filter or a sticky tab. Mine lasted about two weeks for smell.
