Does this need to be calibrated frequently?

It calibrates itself every time it is turned on. I have found that’s all it needs. Occasionally you might find that when you remove all weight it may not be at zero and then you need to recalibrate. That’s my experience with such scales. I’ve never had that happen yet with this one. I am frequently able to begin weighing ingredients and simply tare the scale to add the next ingredient and so on.

Are batteries included?

No they do not but they are just 2 AAA batteries.
