Is this necessary? i have a fire stick 4k that i use a generic micro usb cable to power directly from the tv.  what does this product do?

Here is a way to get constant power to the Fire TV Stick 4K.  It works if your TV is a long distance from a power receptacle or if you are running cables through walls:

1. Add a  Y splitter for your TV power cord at the TV end of the power cord.   
	2. Add a NEMA 1-15R adapter for the Fire TV USB power adapter to one of the splitter outputs.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE:
Many newer TVs use a 2 prong male to figure 8 female (NEMA 1-15P to C7) power cord.

For this power cord you will need 2 parts:
	1. A C8 to 2x C7 Y splitter (Figure 8 male to 2 figure 8 female Y splitter)
	2. A C8 to NEMA 1-15R adapter (figure 8 male to 2 prong female adapter)
Both are available on Amazon.  Combined price $15.98.
	
Installation:
	1. Unplug the TV power cord from the wall outlet.  
	2. At the TV (C7) end of the TV power cord attach the C8 (male) end of the C8 to 2x C7 Y splitter.
	3. Plug one Y output of the splitter into the TV.  
	4. Plug the C8 to NEMA 1-15R (figure 8 male to 2 prong female) adapter onto the other Y splitter output.  
	5. Plug the Fire TV USB power adapter into the 2 prong female adapter (NEMA 1-15R).  
	6. Plug the Fire TV USB cable into the USB power adapter and then into the Fire TV stick.  
	7. Now plug the TV power cord back into the wall outlet.

NOTES:
	A. NEMA Connectors: NEMA 1-15P/NEMA 1-15R are 2 wire 15 amp AC adapters.  The male (plug) version is NEMA 1-15P and the female (receptacle/outlet) version is NEMA 1-15R.
IEC Connectors: C7/C8 are 2 wire IEC Connectors.  The female version is C7  and the male version is C8.

Other than the shape, what is the difference between this and the fatter-looking one for fire tv stick?

Es solo un cable que te permite conectar el Fire a un  puerto USB de tu televisor y así darle la corriente necesaria para funcionar. No cumple otra función que esa. El Fire Max es quien te da la posibilidad de ver peliculas y series a traves de Netflix, Amazon y otras similares. Saludos

No, y no lo necesitas si lo que estas buscando es el fire tv de amazon. Esto es solo si detras de tu tv no tienes el conductor de electricidad. Yo devolvi las mia por que el fire tv se conecto sin esta pieza
