professional sharpening can be done at home
i first learned how to use this system with the Horl 2, then after reading the Horl 3 and Pros were being released later this year, i decided to get the Horl 2 Pro with its planetary gearing because the Horl 3 will use incompatible discs. the planetary gearing really does cut down the time for sharpening. my FIL's kitchen knives hadn't been touched in over 3 years, and when i tested their edges on a sharpness tester, i was getting ~1200-1300 BESS. i already had all the sanding discs (coarse diamond, standard set, premium set, kagami). with the Horl 2 Pro, i was able to sharpen them to 85-135 BESS. phenomenal! since understanding the importance of knife maintenance, i've invested in higher quality kitchen knives for myself that have an HRC ~60+ (blue steel #2 kiritsuke). i hope the HORL 2 Pro can maintain them

The best kitchen cutlery sharpener, period.
I have several sharpening systems from wicked edge to simple Whetstones and everything in between. This system is easy to use most kitchen knives, conveniently on the mark. The interior gears provide three times the torque that you would normally get when using a rotary sharpener of this type. I was skeptical at first, but now am a true believer.I would recommend that the user have a leather strop keeping the finish tight. If your blades are 15° or 20° this is the perfect tool.If I had only one system in the kitchen, it would be this system.

Box for it?
I recently got this with the additional 3000 and 6000 stone. Oof that's a chunk. I won't comment on performance yet as I need more time with it. Immediately the weight of this thing is noticable. I wanted a storage option and the only thing I found was a simple wood box by HORL for $300? I mean maybe it has 18 carrot gold hinges idk. I found this off brand pelican case for $30 that works pretty well and it's waterproof. Just thought you'd want to know if you're gonna spend $500 on a sharpener.https://a.co/d/54kiZ4F

You have to use a delicate and precise technique
It rolls harder than I thought it would.Maybe due to gearing ratio of three to one.I have only tried it twice.Guess it will take practice to get better results

Just by the cheaper Horl model 2
I bought both this one and the Horl 2 to compare. The only stated difference between the 2 - other than the astronomical price difference - was "planetary gear rotation" to sharpen blades faster.Honestly, I didn't notice any difference in the time it took the sharpen the knives, and the pro model has all the same complaints I have about the Horl 2 - that being, it being hard to keep the blade from "curling" on the magnet and getting out of alignment, its inability to sharpen high profile blades, and the use of materials for the sharpening medium instead of higher quality synthetic stones or ceramic.I'll probably keep the Horl 2 for sharpening my steak knives just because I'm pretty lazy about that, continuing to sharpen my kitchen knives on whetstones. As for this pro model? I'm sorry, but 400-some-odd dollars for this is borderline usurious - a complete rip-off. Just by the sub-$200 model or maybe even one of the knock-offs if you're feeling brave (I personally wouldn't because I can't trust something THAT cheap).Having my wife box this one up and send it back to Amazon.

Best with kitchen knives
If you have completely flat backed knives and handle then this will work like a dream. If not then your going to have to get something thin to put under it so you can hit the back of the blade properly. Also with its planetary gear system I’ve found that it’s best to resist the temptation to go back and for really fast. I’m still Learning the system but I finding it’s best to just do single strokes in the same direction and let the gears do all the work for you. Small knives are kind of a pain.
