Great CPU at a great price
Fantastic price to performance for this AMD Ryzen CPU. For around £150 you are getting 6 cores and 12 threads, which is useful for plenty of tasks including video editing, development and running virtual machines, as well as day-to-day work such as browsing the web or using office suites. It is fully compatible with pretty much all A320/B350/X370 boards straight out of the box without needing any BIOS updates, as it was one of the original Ryzen 5 chips, unlike the newer APUs (namely 2200G and 2400G) which may need a BIOS update first. Installation is fairly straightforward, just release the latch on the motherboard, carefully place the CPU into the socket, and line it up with the golden triangle so you get it in the correct way around. As it relies on the pins at the bottom, be careful when handling it so as to not damage any pins - hold it around the sides if possible. Once installed, it comes with the superb "Wraith Spire" cooler (included in the price), which does a good job of keeping the CPU at cool temperatures without the need for a third-party solution, and the thermal paste comes pre-applied. This is a little trickier to install depending on the motherboard, but it is 4 screws and if you cross (do one corner then the opposite) which ones you tighten, it is easier and prevents damage from putting too much pressure on one area. Once installed and plugged into the CPU fan header, it idles at around 33 degrees celcius on my machine (which is a good temperature for a stock cooler), however your own results may vary slightly. Even with lots of programs, including a game and a virtual machine running, it only reached 55 degrees celcius, so there will be some room for a mild overclock using this cooler, provided you are using a B350 or X370 chipset. It also runs quietly, you can barely hear the fans even when they are spinning fully. The performance of the processor itself is great, it'll match or beat most Intel i5 offerings (and even some i7 chips), which is excellent considering the noticeable price difference and the better stock cooler that AMD provides. For multi-core workloads (such as video editing) it works perfectly, and while the single-core performance isn't quite as good (this isn't really too much of an issue), once software can fully optimise all of the cores, it'll perform drastically better. It also handles gaming well, paired with even a 750Ti it can handle games such as Rocket League on High/Ultra settings at 70-100FPS, so paired with a better GPU will yield great results in even modern triple-A titles. Be sure to download the Ryzen Master software from AMD, where you can monitor the temperature accurately and adjust CPU settings, as well as the AMD Ryzen Chipset Drivers, which include a Windows power plan which is optimised for use with Ryzen CPUs. In conclusion, I couldn't be happier with this Ryzen 5 1600. Smashes competition in terms of price to performance, includes a great cooler and runs pretty much anything you can throw at it with ease. I would highly reccommend this processor.

Amazing bang-for-buck performance
I originally paid £205 for this on the day it was available on Amazon and wow, it is fast! One of the best desktop computer components I've bought in a while. The Ryzen 5 1600 is rated at 65W TDP, which considering how much processing power is packed into this little beasty, is insanely energy efficient. The lower wattage also means it'll put out less heat than the 1600X. You can of course overclock the 1600 to nearly the same speed as the 1600X with the right cooling setup. As a reference for how good this CPU is at gaming, my new setup is: - This CPU (Ryzen 5 1600) - 16GB G.SKILL DDR4 RAM - XFX Radeon R9 390 8GB GDDR5 - DD Black Edition - Gigabyte GA-AB350 Gaming 3 Motherboard - 650W EVGA Gold-rated PSU Battlefield 1 runs at 60FPS, on ultra, at 1080p and uses between 45 - 55% of this CPU in a 64 player battle. BF1 is a resource heavy game so it makes a great starting point for testing out a new system. GTA V would also do the job nicely. I doubt this CPU will break a sweat if you want higher frame rates! Most other games I've tried so far (Space Engineers, Factorio, Hearthstone, Kerbal Space Program) don't come anywhere close to even 50% usage on this CPU. Factorio, one of the lightest games I've tried so far, takes as little as 1 - 2% of the CPU. But, I didn't buy this CPU for just gaming, I'm also a software developer and I can tell you, my compile times in Visual Studio have been drastically reduced with this CPU. If you're looking for a budget CPU which packs a lot of power while also providing a decent amount of future-proofing, this is the sweet spot! UPDATE: Now that I've had a decent amount of time to do some real work with the CPU, I can say that it is a content-creator's dream. It's ability to multi-task is definitely a major selling point if you're looking for a budget upgrade to your content-creation hardware. Expect nothing less from a 6-core, 12-thread CPU! UPDATE NOV 2017: I've been using this CPU for a good 6 months and it's been an absolute pleasure. Not a single issue. It performs as well as the first day I had it. It's also runs amazingly cool with the provided cooler. With past CPUs I've had to buy a separate third-party cooler to improve temperatures, but I haven't needed to with the Ryzen 1600. I've yet to find anything that can really push it to its limits in day to day use. Probably the best £205 I've ever spent and now its even cheaper!

Ridiculous value
This processor is simply amazing value at this price and the performance boost coming from my old fx8320 has completely blown me away. The general snappiness of my system seems much better and the games I play most have been hugely improved, notably the minimum FPS. The AM4 platform as a whole is excellent, with great value B350 motherboards capable of overclocking and a good upgrade path down the line as long as the Zen 2 and 3 meet expectations. It comfortably sweeps aside the i5 line up in terms of value, getting 3x the threads and only marginally lower IPC. With the stock cooler you are almost guaranteed an overclock of 3.7 Ghz at reasonable temperatures making this better value than the 1600x, especially as the 1600x comes without a stock cooler. The only thing I could possibly mention is that the overclocking results can vary and won't generally reach the same frequencies as its big brother the 1600x. If you already have a good aftermarket cooler, you might want to consider the 1600x if reaching 3.9 or 4 Ghz is important to you.

Good CPU does the job
Good CPU does the job, a very good job. if you're not looking to sped almost £330 on the i7 8700k and looking to do any resolution gaming at 100fps this is the CPU. however if you're looking to do like 144fps gaming this is not the CPU for you. The low clock-speed limits this CPU, but for the price, can't complain. if you're looking to overclock to 4ghz you really do need a high end air cooler or a aio because when you push 1.4v at 4.0ghz OOOOOOO BOY! it does get warm. Would not put a 1080 ti- but a 1070-1080, yes.

Just upgraded to ryzen from previous fx series. Although it is from 1st generation but better than fx at least. Of course 2nd & 3rd generation ryzens are more efficient/powerful. However, it can be overclocked to 3.7ghz easily with a B450 motherboard, fast RAM and stock cooler, to get similar performance. Besides, this would be the cheapest 6 core 12 thread processor. When compared with price to performance (comparing to other ryzen processors from 1st generation) it is should be a logical choice. Go for it only if you already have or willing to buy a dedicated graphics card. Without a dedicated GPU your pc wont boot to display screen. If a dedicated graphics card is not in the list then opt for 2200g, 3200g, 2400g etc......... Update: No lag at all. No bottlenecks when gaming. Using a coolermaster hyper 212 instead of stock cooler. Now I can overclock even further (that doesnt mean stock cooler isnt efficient). Stock wraith cooler is great but I like to overclock and test the limits of this CPU. Hence using an aftermarket cooler. Temperature doesnt climb beyond 65 degrees when put under heavy load. Overall worth the money and effort.
